RTR Hike #4 - Altha Trail and Blountstown Greenway

  • Winn Dixie Parking Lot

HWY 77, Lynn Haven, FL (map)

    30.228964 -85.649757

  • Sadly, we must cancel and re-schedule this a second time.  The risk of thunderstorms in the Altha/Blountstown area is too great.  A new date will be announced later.

For our FINAL hike of the River-to-River Hike Series, we will walk our trails in the Chipola Section, including the Altha Trail and the Blountstown Greenway. After hiking about 3 miles on the beautiful new Altha Trail along the Chipola River, we will drive down to Blountstown for a 3 1/2 mile walk along the paved Greenway. As we pass through town on the Greenway, we will stop for lunch at the El Jalisco Mexican restaurant, and visit the M&B Railroad Museum. Please bring a few dollars for a donation at the museum.

Tony Shoemake, Mayor of Blountstown and local historian, will join us on the Greenway to share information about the history and other interesting features of the M&B Railroad and Blountstown.

The total walking distance for the day will be about 7 miles, but the terrain is flat and our walk will be broken up into three segments with rests between.

We'll meet at the Lynn Haven Winn Dixie at 7:30 am for anyone who wants to carpool. Please remember to tip your driver at least $5 for gas if you ride.

We expect to arrive at the Altha trailhead about 8:30 am. If you wish to meet us there, it is located on SR 274 where it crosses over the Chipola River, about 1 1/2 miles east of SR 73. The traihead is on the east side of the River.

Bring hat, water, snacks, good walking shoes, camera, cash for your driver, and bug repellent. With the exception of the restaurant and museum, there are no restroom facilities along these two trails.

To download and print maps of the Altha Trail and Blountstown Greenway, go to "More" and "Files" on this meetup site.

Thanks for participating in the River-to-River Hike series! See you there!

Hate to withdraw from this hike, but a family member is supposed to show up tomorrow and need to stay put at my place. I hope you all have a great day!

Based on weather forecasts, I am regretfully going to cancel my spot for this hike and hope next weekend fares better.

Rain looks like it's gonna get it again. Gonna change to indoor jobs an open up space for 2 swimmers!

Bad weather and death in family are both changing my weekend plans for this hike. Much disappointed.

Still holding out for a break in weather. I'll look close at the forecast tomorrow (Friday). Later in the day if it still looks like a good chance of thunderstorms or heavy rain Saturday, I will post a message here that we're canceled. Would be a pity because this is our second try!
