WELCOME TO FEET FIRST GUIDED HIKING AND OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURES IN AUCKLAND FOR ALL .
We started in 2010 and hike, trek, or tramp as we call bush walking here in NZ , most weekends on a Saturday and sometimes a Sunday, and other days during the week over the summer we do urban city walks after work .
Feet First is for adults only , so you must be at least 18 years old to attend our hiking events .
We stop lots, so if you're interest is hiking, and finding some great spots for photography, this is the Meet Up group to join.
We welcome all adults from all countries , as well as those from NZ , who love being active in the outdoors and socializing with like-minded people.
If you are stuck in the office all week or visiting Auckland for a few months studying or would love to get out more and explore the countryside with a local then this hiking group is perfect for you.
If you're not familiar with Meet Up.It's been operating in NZ for many years now. Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. It has its roots in the USA and was started by two guys in New York after 9/11 as a way of getting more people off the internet and into community. Users enter their postal code or their city and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps them arrange a place and time to meet. Topic listings are also available for users who only enter a location.
As of April 2013, the company claimed to have 13.4 million members in 196 countries and 125,247 groups, although these figures may include inactive members and groups.
Meet up allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, when they are travelling or living in another country away from their home city , such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies, or in our case hiking and tramping . Here in Auckland , on an hiking event we can have a group of 30 plus members out for a hike and have 10 different nations represented .
So thanks for considering joining our Meet Up Group - Feet First Hiking and Outdoor Photography Adventures for All..... Please Read on ...
There are about 6 other Meet Up Hiking Groups in Auckland - However - What we do is different on Feet First Guided Hiking and Adventures - We keep our numbers on our events mostly to under 30 members and our planned events are with an experienced outdoor leader showing you the way.
You can safely explore the bush with our group, and along the way learn about the right gear to buy to enjoy and protect yourself from the cold, heat, wet and wind that NZ outdoors is all about while you're travelling around NZ or just want to learn some tips from the mix of experienced born and bred NZ trampers like me , that are part of Feet First Hiking too .
We are a social group, and stop lots on the hills to encourage moments to pause to rest and take in the views...Or to get your camera out and take a great outdoor picture...We also stop to talk about the things we are walking past, like identifying the names of trees and plants and birds we hear or see , or local history of the places we visit or if you have a question about something.
We also carpool to get to our events, and its up to you to organise this amongst yourself prior to a hike as we share rides to get to the start of the track - which helps keeps our group Feet First smaller and friendly.
We hike as a group on the day you come , and as responsible leaders we make sure members do not get left behind on our hikes by having a tail end Charlie/ co-leader and stopping at track junctions and other places throughout the day to do a head count .
We also run occasional social activities and meetups where you can leave your hiking boots at home and relax over a drink or meal , or soak in the hot pools near to the tracks we hike, like Miranda Hot Pools in South Auckland or Parakai near Helensville or sometimes further south at Te Aroha.
Where do we hike -
That skyline of blue-green hills to the north and west of Auckland is called the Waitakere Ranges and takes about an hour to drive to from Queen Street. Famous beaches nearby like Piha and Karekare , and others are visited often.
This area of West Auckland is where Feet First does most of its hiking . It is a wonderland of bush, stream and sea, with over 200km of tracks suitable for all levels of experience.
Whether you come to experience the raw power of the west coast beaches, the tranquillity of the inland forests , the swimming holes of the hill streams or enchantment of the wilderness areas we hike in , there will be something that will amaze you, if you're new to Auckland or New Zealand.
We do visit other places around Auckland, and sometimes we do out of town trips to the Coromandels or other places on special occasions.
Most members on Feet First are aged around 25 - 55 years old. Some though are younger, some older !
Why do we do it -
Hiking is fun but hiking with friends is one of life's greatest pleasures. We are passionate about showing people the areas we have explored and we'd like to share that passion with you. Whether you're new to hiking or a seasoned hiker we're confident you'll find our smaller grouped hiking trips fun, challenging and above all ...have an amazing social experience where you'll meet new friends.
We carpool to share costs, which is up to you to organise when you rsvp, giving $10 to the driver who arranges to pick you up from your home or location you choose. For this reason it's important for everyone, to have a clear photo of yourself on your profile.
Most hikes we do are about 4 or 5 hours long, depending on the weather and event, and also the overall fitness of the group, and we sometimes we do longer trips throughout the summer daylight saving hours.
It's free to join Feet First - though we ask for a donation to cover the cost of this website on the hiking event you attend.. A $2 gold coin is appreciated when you arrive , or after the hike.
During this meet up you will;
-explore the many tracks in the Waitakere Ranges, and other Regional Parks in Auckland within a few hours drive.
-get to the start of each hike by carpooling or sharing a ride with another member.
- hike with a group of less than 30 members with your outdoor safety in mind , while observing a few simple hiking guidelines.
- explore areas of bush that have been previously explored by the leader .
-learn something about what we are walking past like the trees and plants etc.
- see waterfalls, wildlife, breathtaking views and black sand beaches .
- stop to take some great photos.
- relax and listen to the sounds of nature.
- stop at a great café after the hike sometimes .
Each hike is guided and is graded easy, medium or hard...Or on a scale of 1-5 .
Easy ( 1-2 ) - suitable for beginners; gentle hills, alot of stops, wet feet a possibility.
Medium (2-3 ) - steeper hills to climb, a lot of stops, wet feet a possibility
Hard (4 -5) - longer hikes needing confidence and stamina, wet feet a definite.
Once you join us… and come out on a Feet First Hike, you'll see from other members what you need to buy or purchase from an outdoor shop to make your next hike more enjoyable and fun.
So thanks for checking us out - Feed your hiking habit, or start it with us .
