Good retort Dorothy...touche!!...an example of dry British humor? I value teachers like you who can teach me more about history, as I a mere functional illiterate.

Be prepared Dorothy...I cannot match you re specific knowledge of history.

I am an idiot/savant re history..

Be prepared Dorothy...nobody can match me re general knowledge of any history....nobody...

Be prepared to answer pointed questions re your important speech...

    It's definitely not string theory.

Dorothy...I am looking forward to your talk....my I suggest three things...

1-The "infamous" Barbara 20/30 minute rule.

2-Keeping your extremely important and possible ground breaking but esoteric talk down to earth for functional illiterates like me. I am really interested on what you have to say and teach..

3-(optional...I think we can take this from our history
talk budget..budget?...a round of drinks for all..

By the way Barbara...there is a rival history club/meetup that is being formed as we speak here in NYC.. I am on top of it...they are a bunch of interlopers, neer de wells, johnny come lately, stage door johnnys..

I will give you a full report on my next post.

    contd.
This scheme runs into the obvious objection that we humans exist on the surface of the earth in direct contact with the sphere of air. The most popular rational for this phenomenon was that the earth had been miraculously moved from the very center of the cosmos so as to allow a portion of its surface to come in contact with the air.
A necessary corollary of this theory was that only one continuous land mass could exist.
The discovery of a detached New World cast such doubt on the Aristotelian Scheme that it led to what Thomas Kuhn termed "The Copernican Revolution".

    contd.
This universe was divided into two realms: an inner material sub lunar world of imperfection and an outer ethereal world of unchanging perfection.
The sub lunar world of matter consisted of four elements earth, water, air and fire of decreasing density, which formed a structure of nesting spheres with the densest element i.e. earth at the center. The spherical earth was surrounded by a sphere of water (the second densest element) which in turn was surrounded by a sphere of air with a sphere of fire as the outermost before the moon marked the beginning of the ethereal realm.

    Hi, Barbara
I would like to entitle my talk: From Sublunar World to Heliocentric Model via Columbus and Vespucci.
The most unfamiliar idea to us moderns is the Sublunar World. Here is a brief exposition. ( If you could send me an e-mail I can add explanatory diagrams.)
Medieval geographers did not believe that the earth was flat. They followed the cosmology of Aristotle and Ptolemy which posited a spherical earth at the center of the universe (turning as one).

Barbara, I'm so sorry to cancel last minute, but I have a miserable and messy cold that probably no one wants to share

I changed the RSVP Barbara. I actually did a bit of research on Harding's sex scandals...Somebody from the Washington Post wrote a book on it. I will cover it briefly next time I come.

It is still long range but there may have another snow storm on the new History club date too..

Maybe next year we should schedule our Dec-Feb meetings in Miami?

I will not be on another vacation till June when I will be jaunting off to Barcelona or jolly old London.

I of course I will make sure it doesn't conflict with the history club and snow will not be an issue.

Say hello to the gang next week...

I hope everyone will do some research - internet or other- on Harding's scandals so we can have a good discussion.
