Introduction

I have been the director and one of the instructors in the San Gemini Historic Preservation Studies Program since 1999, when it was founded. Preservation of cultural heritage, in its various forms, has always been one of my greatest passions.

Are you a San Gemini: Alumnus (year)/ Faculty/ Applicant 2008 / Prospective Student / Other?

Faculty and Program Director 1999-2008

Where do you live or study?

I live and work in New York City most of the time. In the summer, while directing the SGHPS, I live in San Gemini (Italy) and I spend some time on-and-off in Milwaukee. I am originally from Rome (Italy), where I was born.

In what field do you study or work?

I split my time working as an architect, in New York City, and as a teacher and the director of the SGHPS. My work as an architect and teacher has not been limited to preservation, although that is an important component. I am a registered architect in New York and you can visit my professional website www.mcardillo.com to get a sense of the work I do. At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee I have a position as Researcher and Adjunct Assistant Professor.

What are your interests in Historic Preservation and restoration?

As an undergraduate at University of Wisconsin-Madison I studied Art History and later at Columbia University I received a Masters Degree in Architecture. I have always had an interest in art, architecture and history. When I started my professional career in the US the preservation movement was starting and Americans were just beginning to deal with these issues. Since then I have been involved with historic preservation in both my professional and academic activities.

Why are you interested in the San Gemini Historic Preservation Studies Program?

I have known San Gemini for a long time and I have family connections to this town. Although it is not a world tourist destination, San Gemini has a substantial historical and artistic heritage spanning from ancient Roman times to the present. Perhaps the fact that most motivated me to create a program on this site is that there are some very active and motivated local preservation organizations that welcomed us from the beginning and have continued to aid and collaborate with our work there over the last ten years.
