A few things you should know: 1. Hong Kong is an extremely safe place. However, the night brings out the best and worst in people so let's just be careful and try to look out for each other. I would suggest walking around in small groups - If you are going to walk down a dark alley, tell someone. 2. My phone number is 63544443. Texts only. Only phone me in an emergency(accident, death or if you want to give me money or camera gear for free). Being lost is not an emergency...lol 3. It's going to be a long and cold night so dress and pack your camera bag accordingly. 4. Photography at night can be tricky. So, here are some tips. http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/11/09/60-beautiful-examples-of-night-photography-2/ http://digital-photography-school.com/night-photography http://jpgmag.com/stories/7779 http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/2012/02/17/night-photography-tips-9-essential-steps-for-beginners/ http://blog.photoshelter.com/2012/05/six-standout-night-photography-tips-to-help-you-master-the-craft/ http://nikonites.com/d90/3052-ideal-lens-night-photography.html http://www.thephotoforum.com/forum/photography-beginners-forum/201072-lens-suggestion-night-photography.html 5. Please review all the meetup details so that you are familiar with them on the night.

It was great and an interesting photo walk. The first couple km's from Cheung Sha Wan MTR station was not as interesting as the section closer to Nathan Road, however.

For this outing we will venture out to the area around the Chep Lap Kok airport. We will meet inside Tung Chung MTR station at exit B, then take the S52 bus from the adjacent bus terminal to the Aircraft Maintenance Area (about 12 minute ride). We will be at the western tip of the airport, right outside its perimeter, on South Perimeter Road: http://maps.google.co... Depending on the wind direction on that day, we will be able to see and capture up close (distance of about[masked] meters) planes lining up for takeoff, taking off or landing on the southern runway. The area is generally a pretty exciting place to be with takeoffs and landings about every 3-4 minutes. It is also possible to capture takeoffs or landings on the northern runway, though from a much greater distance. A few sample shots from my earlier reconnaissance trip to the area a few weeks ago:

http://www.flickr.com... I would highly recommend to bring a telephoto lens, 200+mm would be my suggestion, the longer the better. At 200+mm and large aperture it is possible to get decent (though a bit soft) shots of airplanes inside the airport perimeter through the fence. A polarizer will also be handy when shooting planes above the water. Please make sure to bring sunblock and enough water to stay hydrated as we're well into the summer weather and the area is exposed to the sun.

Great outing - thanks Sean! Best part for me was the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market which was buzzing. Special mention to Pete as well. The German Riesling was excellent with McWings!

I hope you got some good pictures all of you.

Thank you Sean for this out-of-the-box meetup, it gave a chance to see the interesting, insomniac side of Hong Kong with a lot of photo opportunities that certainly are not available during the daytime.

...I'm a bit confused...are we gonna be like a bunch of people lingering down the street for the whole night and shooting whatever is still there? We also wait for sunrise I understand...

One question. We will start Saturday, 12.01. 12.30 am ...which is basically Friday (11.01.) night? In that case I unfortunately cannot join as I come back to Hong KOng only Saturday Afternoon :-(

Is it possible to arrange another meetup the following Friday? I m in HK only for 2 weeks and like to join this group for a great photo walk.

      January 10, 2013

    • Sean C.

Hi Helen, yes you can arrange another one for next Friday. All you need to do is say and we can make you a event organizer and then you can create a meetup for next week. Just copy and paste all the same details into correct places and ill check it for you once you've finished. This meetup is fairly straight forward and if you have a smart phone you will never get lost!

Just seen 40+ people are signed up! As a recommendation, try to come with your own brief/theme in mind before the start. It will help you with story-telling rather than just ending up with a collection of random night shots.

Sean: I spend a lot of time shooting in that neighborhood, at all hours. As you correctly state, HK is generally a safe place, even at night. Just one tip - do not try to shoot the working girls unless you're itchin' for a fight. They are very camera hostile, and their "keepers" are not particularly gentile people.

I am arriving in HK on the 12th, if I managed to stay up till mid-night, will definitely come out to meet everyone!

Hi All, Please check the above update. Please check the google map links and know where you are going! A good idea is to google some of the attractions in those areas, check guide books and search Flickr for picture ideas.
