Workshop for New Uke Players & "Pirate Jam" for Everyone

The North Harris County Dulcimer Society isn't normally into ukuleles, but at our March meeting (the third Saturday, March 16th) we will have a special visit from Guy and Sharrie George. Guy will teach hammered dulcimer and pennywhistle workshops (though he also plays steel drums.) Sharrie plays guitar and ukulele. They also sell a variety of ukes and steel drums, etc.

Sharrie will teach a beginner/intermediate uke class and the club will then host a "Pirate Jam" (all acoustical instruments are welcome.) There will also be a concert later that afternoon.

For more information about the location, parking, etc. please visit the club website at:

And if you decide to attend, dress TROPICAL!!!

The building is not "handicap friendly." It's an old historical building and access requires stair climbing.

Planning to drop by for a bit tomorrow- most likely towards the 2nd half of the festivities. Is the event all inside or will there be some outside stuff too.?

Tomorrow is the day! And you don't have to play uke to attend!!! You don't even have to be a pirate (or dress tropical) to attend!

I really wish I could make it, but am in Africa for work. =(
If anyone hears of another shindig like this again I would love to attend.

Africa!? How exciting. So sorry we won't see you there, but hopefully there will be more opportunities in the future.

By the way, Sharrie George is a uke vendor. I expect she'll have a few ukes for sale. And I believe she'll have a limited number of loaners for the really NEW newbies.

This does sound interesting. Not only for the uke but for the other instruments as well. I wonder how many of the Houkulele members will attend.

So far, 10, but it's not limited to uke players.

I am going to try and make it. Put me down as a definate mabey.

    March 6, 2013

    • Vicki K.

I look forward to seeing you there, Brian!

I'm so excited about the RSVP list! So far, 10 FLEAs hope to attend! This is going to be so much FUN!

Please join us in the festive spirit and wear your pirate attire, with or without eye patch and/or peg leg! Tropical costumes, straw hats, and pirate props are encouraged! Arrrggghh!!!

And even if you don't play ukulele, bring any acoustical instrument you wish. Though its actually a DULCIMER club this will be a unique experience for the club. (We like guitar, pennywhistle, stand-up base, mandolin, autoharp, and we've *even* allowed a banjo or two. Shhhhh... But don't tell the banjo players!!!)

But what will make it truly fun is Guy's steel drum and his hammered dulcimer. Once Guy & Sharrie get a pirate jam going, it's *really* fun!

Well, I intend to be there. I'm a bass player, guitar hacker and a uke lover. Looking forward to it.

That's awesome, Buck! ...and you are welcome to bring your acoustical toys and play with us any time! Our regular meetings are focused on old-time genre of music as practice for our "pioneer" exhibitions. "Whiskey Before Breakfast," "Old Joe Clark," "Soilder's Joy, " etc. etc.

This pirate jam will be a diversion from the regular stuff we do, but I've done it with the Georges earlier this month in Florida and we had a blast!

      February 25, 2013

I'll receive jam music that the club will play. Once I have it, I'll post so people can practice ahead of time, if they wish to. But mostly just come have some fun with us. We don't care if you've practiced! ;-)

    Sounds great!

I can't wait to find out, Buck! The group is dedicated mostly to dulcimer players but some play autoharp, guitar, bass, pennywhistle, etc.) I play guitar, but I'll pick up my uke and play that. (Just chords.)

The club frequently does exhibitions at various festivals. We often dress in pioneer clothes and regularly a slice-of-life exhibitions in historical locations (Washington-on-the-Brazos, Armand Bayou, San Jacinto Monument, etc., etc.) The club is very welcoming.

Guy George is an excellent hammered dulcimer player and that's the main focus for the club, but his wife loves the uke and Guy also plays steel drum (he gives lessons in that, but we only have so many workshops we can schedule.)

Anyway, my husband and I were in Florida earlier this month to attend a festival there and played with Guy and Sharrie. They're whole theme is pirate stuff and "Jimmy Buffet" sort of things, so if you can make it, be as "Jimmy Buffet" as possible and be ready for some great fun!!!

Will be working during most of this, but this sounds like a great opportunity.

It's not really for beginners only! Come have some fun with us!
