The Houston Anime Meetup Group Pages

We're a bunch of people who gather together to discuss the latest in anime, manga, and vocaloid related topics, and maybe the occasional Visual Novel or Japanese dating sim game. NOTE: If you are a "Dub Only" fan or only get your anime on domestically released DVD's or via Netflix or some similar way, then sorry, you are out of luck, and you should probably move on. Some of us like dubs just fine & they sometimes can be great & all, but our focus is mainly on anime currently airing in Japan & streaming via the web, as this is the only realistic way to be able to share in the communal experience of watching anime "together" as a group & build a sense of community.

We talk about anything and everything. No subject is too sacred or taboo.

We are open-minded, raunchy, loud, offensive, and sometimes yes even rude. So if you don't think you'd be able to handle a group that is open about anything and everything and doesn't take itself seriously most of the time then this isn't for you and you should look elsewhere.

Otherwise come on over and laugh with us.

For a brief overview of what we do at these meetups here is a link that sums it up best:

Types of Events

We try to have at least two Meetup events every month, with at least one held at a venue within the 610 loop or within 10-20 minutes of downtown.

Every month, unless holidays are a factor, we try to have an event in one of the outlying parts of the Houston Area to give those who live far out on any side an opportunity to come and get to know our group.

I try to find venues as convenient as possible on all sides of the Houston area, and the locations are sometimes outside of Beltway 8 if not farther. This is to provide some form of convenience to everyone on the particular side we're visiting regardless of how far they live from central Houston.

Currently the only side we are not visiting is the East side, but if you live in that area and would like us to give you an opportunity to hang out with us just contact me and I'll be happy to try and schedule something.

We no longer have anime showings due to low interest. Since it's hard to get people to agree on what they want to watch or even get them to come out to a showing when these days it's so much easier to just watch it on your PC from the comfort of your own home, I stopped organizing them. Instead we occasionally do things like "Trivia Night" or "Interactive Anime Night", where members play a game while watching a show instead of just passively sitting in a dark room watching it.

As stated at the top, join this group ONLY if you have a desire to meet and hang out with other anime fans, or at least want to join in the discussions on our message boards from time to time. Sorry to be such a stickler on this issue, but we've been having problems with people joining the group and never RSVP'ing "Yes" or "Maybe" or even a "No" for any of our meetups, or even trying to post anything on any threads about anime or anything else on our discussion boards, or even bothering to log in. It's almost like they joined the group one night while they were drunk and surfing the web and completely forgot about it (LOL).

I know its not possible to attend every event and it is not expected. It is possible, however, to keep informed of our group by visiting the site periodically.

Any group strives and survives solely on participation by its members. As such, I periodically go through the Members section of the site looking for members that have been inactive for more than 2 months and have never made any attempt to attend an event or remain active on the boards and I remove them.

All you have to do is log into the site at least once every two months. That is not alot to ask of anyone given the online access people now have.

Those few members who have been inactive for over 2 months and are still members are those who were formerly active and made contributions to the group. Those contributions earned them the benefit of staying in this group and continuing to get notifications of events and information.

Many of us have lots and LOTS of different titles and we regularly share what we have. Chances are if you're looking for it, one of us has it.

It us entirely up to the individual whether or not they choose to lend out what they have. Our general policy unless otherwise stated is to watch and give back anything you borrow as soon as you can so others have the same oppurtunity to watch as many different titles as they like.

We do not rent, sell, or otherwise distribute for profit anything we have inside the group. If you wish to do so you can do it individually outside the group.

Message Boards

The boards are there for non-individual communication between members of the group. I believe in freedom of expression as such the boards are not monitored for language and content.

It is best used for questions and discussions about anime related information such as new titles and recommendations, or opinions, events that this group plans to participate in or would like to let other members know of, general member information such as what not to do to get booted from the group, games that we sometimes play online such as our own Saimoe participation game, and sometimes just random funny or interesting things we find on the web, either anime related or not.

We also have discussion threads under the "Anime" folder dedicated to new & ongoing shows in Japan so we can watch them as a group as each episode comes out every week and discuss our thoughts on it. This can be especially useful for members who can't always come to a meetup but may want to keep up with a series with everyone else and post their opinions about it right as they finish seeing it while it's still fresh on their minds, as opposed to waiting until they can come to a meetup. At the beginning of every anime season I will ask peeps on the boards which shows they want to participate in discussing and everyone is welcome to suggest what they want to have a thread devoted to. If enough peeps are willing to regularly discuss each episode as they come out every week (preferably at least a handful), then I will start a thread on it and pin it so the thread stays at the top of the boards in the anime folder.

The questions were made to give the rest of our group an idea of what to expect from new members. It tells us their interests, experiences, and other useful information that we use to get to know people before we meet them.

Meeting a complete stranger is generally not easy. These profiles help to ease that burden as you already know some information about who it is you're meeting.

Please take the time to answer the questions if for anything at least as a courtesy to the other members.

I've generally given up on using this feature on the Meetup site because hardly anyone ever uses it when I do put one up.

Here you can find pictures usually related to a past event. if you take photos at an event we welcome you to post it and share it with the rest of the members.

This benefits everyone by showing what a great time we have at these events.
