Okay...my mom is going throu a Financial problem. My mom cant really afford to pay for Cosplay costumes or wigs. My grandmother could buy the cosplay stuff for me,but she doesn't believe in paying for silly stuff like that. I really want to go to SanJapan 2009 in San Antonio Texas, thats my dream. If I were to attend San Japan, it would be my first Con. If I were to go to San Japan, I would Cosplay for Suigintou from Rozen Maiden. I was thinking about making a PayPal account and let people help me get the Cosplay items, but people would think I was tricking them or something. So there you go...thats my reason for not Cosplaying..

You don't have to cosplay to have fun at a convention. In fact, if it's your first it's probably better that you don't cosplay so you can experience everything without distractions. I've only been to three conventions so far and I haven't cosplayed yet, but I have a blast every time! biggrin

Cosplaying is fun, however it does have it's cons. I would recommend you just go and have fun first before cosplay, talk to other cosplayers before doing it, basically scout out the scene. I've have not cosplay a lot lately but I used to do it a lot, it hard work. It's also rewarding because you can easily make new friends. However, one of the biggest cons is that you will be stalk. I can't tell you how many time some of my female cosplayers , usually friends of mine, ask me to accompany them because they are being follow, its sound silly but its very very true.

If you really want to cosplay, I recommend you make your own costume, you'll get a lot more respect that way. Not to mention its a fraction of the price with Walmart dollar bin fabric and all. All you really need is patient and the will to learn how to sew.

I hope you have a good time at San Japan.
Well that's my two cent.

I was just gonna say I remember an old episode of "Narue No Sekai" where they were talking about how some cosplayers would boast about how much they spent on their outfit, forgetting that it was originally supposed to be about hw much effort and/or creativity you put into making your own.

A lot of times I find myself telling people "you'd be good at cosplaying such and such character" or "you should go dressed as such and such". But truthfully you should only cosplay if 1) your willing to put in the work and 2) you truly have the personality for it (i.e....you're the type who loves to ham it up in front of a camera and love the attention and don't mind having people constantly asking to take your pic).

I agree with whats been said on this thread. It's good to first just go to a con and experience it just for fun. Plus by just networking with the cosplayers there and even just coming to the meetups that we have you can get suggestions and ideas about what characters might be a good fit for you and where you might get supplies to pull it off. Plus you might even be able to get some stuff for free or real cheap or trade from people who have old outfits they don't want or use anymore and you can alter or canabalize them for use in your own outfit. Thats part of why we have these meetups or local events in the anime community.

Anyway hope any of this helps and hope you have fun and maybe try to attend a few meetups in the future for more help or ideas.
