Bioluminicent Bays
It's a natural phenomenon fit for Disney's Fantasia. I've touched it before, but I've never swam in it. This is one of my favorite places in Puerto Rico. There is one in Fajardo and there's one in La Parguera. Why is the water blue green?

Caja de Muertos (Deads Man Chest Island)
This island has an interesting history, nothing to do with Pirates of the Caribbean. ;o) The water clarity makes it very easy to see the coral reefs. This is a great location for snorkeling and scuba diving. There's also a lighthouse on this island. History of the Caja de Muerto

El Yunque
This is rain forest in Puerto Rico. It is currently nominated to be one of the 7 wonders of nature worldwide.

Beaches
With almost 300 miles of coastlines there are tons of beautiful beaches.

Casa Bacardi Distillery
It's a 15-minute drive from our beach house. Here's what they wrote about it, "Visitors are treated to a fascinating guided tour of the facilities at the "Cathedral of Rum." Everything from the vast fermentation vats to the high-speed bottling machinery is at work and on display. A trolley takes you to the Bacardi family museum, where a history of the product and landmarks in its development are seen. The tour ends at the lofty, bat-like pavilion, which you may have seen if you have gazed across San Juan Bay from the southern walls of the Old City. Here you can sample the world-famous rum and buy souvenirs or a variety of Bacardi products at the gift shop."

Arecibo Observatory
The radar was designed to detect life outside of earth. They say that if a cellphone rang in Mars, this radar would pick up the signal. It's nestled in a valley, surrounded by mountains. It's ginormous.

Nearly every town and city has something unique about it.

I just now discovered the Discussion group! cool

Here are some of the places that I would like to go:

  • Bioluminescent Bay was one of the best things I have ever seen in my life. When I went to Las Croabas Lagoon in Fajardo in 2003, we went on a nighttime kayak ride and they let us swim in the water. But reading online now, it looks like they won't let people swim there to preserve the environment. I read online about Mosquito Bay in Vieques, this tour lets you swim in the water. It leaves Fajardo in a Power Catamaran at 5 pm and returns at 10:30 pm, so you don't even have to worry about getting a place to stay in Fajardo for the night.
    East Wind Catamaran - Vieques
  • Flamenco Beach in Culebra
  • Shannan's Pub in Guaynabo. This is a fun place to hang out, they have pool tables, a restaurant, and live band at night (on weekends, not sure about weekdays)- Shannan's Pub
  • Walking around Old San Juan. During the day I like to get one of the cocktails sold at stands and wander around the town.
  • El Yunque - I went on one of the trails here before, but I think they have several different trails
  • Camuy Caves. Mary and I went on a really extreme caving adventure here, but I would like to go on an easier tour. For those of you extreme rappelling/zipline/canyoning/caving adventurists you may want to try Aventuras Tierra Adentro I wrote a travelogue about this Angeles adventure too.
