Spainards are also credit for inventing tapas. Tapa in spanish means lid or cover. The tradition is said to have started in bars; bread and cured ham was placed over beverages, so that the flies couldn't reach the drink. The patrons liked the food so much, it became a successful combination. In time, other small dishes emerged and other regions influenced tapas.
