Flamenco
Gypsies from Spain are credited for inspiring this form of dance. It said to have started in Andalucia 5 centuries ago. Some of the fixed poses reminds me of tango.

Never seen Flamenco live before? YouTube to the rescue with previews. Watch a class dance "Alegrias" on YouTube. "Fire Dance" by Maria Pages is almost magical.

Cuatro La Tempestad

Several of the ladies of Cuatro La Tempestad have actually travelled to Spain to learn from the gypsies themselves. It is a dance they love, and they perform it with gusto. ;o)

We will have seats near the stage, so you can admire the fancy footwork that's involved with Flamenco. We will have about an hour before the show to chat amongst ourselves. Cover is $6.00.

Weather forecast for Sunday according to Weather Channel, sunshine, rain free, in the mid 70s. Fall weather is providing us with air conditioning outside. Sweet relief from summers humid heat. Let's enjoy the weather by the beach. ;o)

Whatever you prefer, there is a bike style for you. The best price comes from the 4 Seaters; it is $ 6 for two hours. The 4 Seaters bikes are one of a kind; I have only seen them by the Seawall in Galveston.

Bike riding with 3 other people at the same time can be so much fun too. You can definitely tell when someone stops pedaling... ha ha ha. The bike rental company accepts cash (smaller bills preferred) and checks for payment.

A list of useful vocabulary and phrases will be available the day of the event. These will be helpful things to know and to practice, so you can converse more easily in Spanish.

Carpool
If you would like to carpool to Galveston, please meet us at 1:45pm at the 3rd level of the Nordstrom Parking Garage at The Galleria. The parking garage is on Hidalgo, between Post Oak and Sage, on the right. The garage is open 24 hours, and the cars will be safe and sound. If you prefer to meet us there, join us at EZ Bike Rental at 3:00pm.

Since it will be such a beautiful day; we thought it might be better to have lunch by the beach. So pack a brown bag lunch, bring a beach towel, we'll be having lunch outside. Sunscreen provided. You can walk on the beach, play with the sand, search for seashells, even go into the water after the bikeride. ;o)

This will be a new setting to converse in Spanish. The weather and company will make this day a plesant day trip. Come out and practice your Spanish by the beach! ;o)

The image to the right (a la derecha) is of statues on Easter Island at Sunset. Click on the photo for a closer look. Beautiful, isn't it? ;o) The statues at Easter Island were built by the Rapanui Indians. Annexed into Chile in 1888, Easter Island continues to be surrounded in mystery. It isn't clear how the large statues at Easter Island were built or transported. Read about Easter Island....

Chile in some Hispanic countries refers to something spicy. The chile I am writing of is the Republic of Chile (República de Chile). ;o) Despite its name, the food from Chile isn't usually spicy. VisitChile.org

It seems many Hispanic cultures have their own version of empanadas. Golden brown half moon shaped turnovers come to mind, when I think of empanadas. Chileans put their own spin on this multi-cultural dish by the ingredients, shape, and cooking method used in their empanadas. These tasty turnovers are actually oven baked. El Temucano dares to say their empanadas are one of the best in Texas. I must admit they offer delicious empanadas, definitely among my favorites. El Temucano's Menu Online

Sabor, in Spanish, means flavor or taste

Savor, in English, means to enjoy flavors

At Sabor you can savor delicious Salvadorean foods.

Most of the food from this restaurant offers dishes from El Salvador. Pupusas (poo-poo-sahs) are one of the most popular foods from El Salvador, similar to a Mexican gordita only the filling is sealed inside; it is served with curitido (coleslaw) and salsa.

Sabor, is one of the few places in Houston that actually carries Central American beers; there are two from El Salvador and one from Guatemala. It should be interesting to see how the flavors compare to that of American beers.

The photo on the top right is of Lake Coatepeque, it is a beautiful lake in the basin of Santa Ana volcano. The island is said to have been the location of spiritual retreats for Mayan leaders. More on Lake Coatepeque

Read about El Salvador at: LonelyPlanet and CIA Worldfact Book. To read the news in Spanish about El Salvador visit El Salvador.org.

He is known for talking his way out of trouble.
He acted in Mexican movies for almost 50 years.
Charlie Chaplin, "he was one of the funniest people in the world."
He is the one and only Cantinflas.

Cantinflas' full name is Fortino Mario Alfonso Moreno Reyes (try saying that a few times, haha). Though his hayday was in the 1930s-1950s, he remains one of the most popular Mexican comedians of all time. He even has a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

http://images1.buymusichere.net/images/video/33/232033.jpg

An introduction to Ahi Esta el Detalle from IMDB.com "Cantinflas, the servant of a rich industrial man, enters his girlfriend's house. He is surprised by his girlfriend's husband, at gun-point Cantinflas talks his way out of trouble. A servant tells the enraged husband that Cantinflas is his wife's brother (Leonardo), who had been lost for years. The rich husband then remembers that his father in law's testament could only be paid when all brothers get together, so treats Cantinflas, a real bum, as a king."

Our event will be closed to the public, available exclusively for HSLM members. You may bring guests to the movie viewing party. For your convenience you may pay online with your credit card. Should you prefer to pay in person, please bring the money in cash, as the credit card machines will not available. There are several ATM machines nearby (Dave and Busters & MarqE Security Office)

Improv Comedy Theatre will be the venue for our movie viewing party. We're watching a comedy, featuring a famous Mexican comedian at a comedy club, how appropriate. haha During the movie, we can enjoy various refreshments. Your online payment of $10 per person covers venue expenses.

Those who attend will receive a $10 game card to use at Dave and Busters after the movie. Your guests can receive a game card too. The $10 game card can be used in a wide variety of games inside Dave and Busters. Explore the game possibilities at Dave & Busters online.

Join us for a funny movie and fun games Sunday afternoon! ;o)

We have a very diverse group. It's a beautiful thing. There are more than 20 countries that have Spanish as the first language. And we have members from every continent except Antartica. ;o)

Bring your favorite dish, one that represents the country you are from. First choice is homemade. Second choice is store/restaurant bought. With your RSVP, please include what you would like to bring. Since we'll have lots to choose from, please bring a medium size portion to share with the group.

http://www.frontier.wnyric.org/frontier/lib/frontier/_shared/Animations/st_patricks_day_pot_gold_hg_clr.gif

Here are things we'll need:
Appetizers (3 people)
Food (your fav dish, from your country of origin)
Desserts (3 people)
Napkins/Paper Plates/Utensils
Ice/Cooler
Drinks (Water, Soft Drinks, Adult Beverages)
Please bring a lawn chair, if you have one.

After dinner, we'll have a few games to play. Pictionary is a board game that allows you to draw and guess what the drawing is. Of course we'll be playing the game in Spanish, so you'll definitely pick up new vocabulary.

We'll also play El Misterio de Los Zapatos Verdes (The Mystery of The Green Shoes), a game where you have to put clues together to find the answer.

There will be so many tasty things to enjoy. The games will be entertaining. Come share your food, your culture, yourself with the Spanish language meetup at our international potluck.
