City of Bones Movie & Book Discussion

Author Cassandra Clare is a controversial figure in the Harry Potter fanfiction world. However, her Mortal Instruments series is a hit in the YA literature world with people who like urban fantasy. The first book in this series has been made into a movie and is hitting theaters August 21.

Let's watch the movie together and then eat somewhere nearby to discuss the first book in the series, City of Bones. We can compare/contrast the book and movie and give our impressions of each.

Date/time/plan: August 25 for the 1:50 showing and then a mid-day snack at Panera or Noodles within walking distance of the theater. Let's meet at the theater around 1:15-1:20 so we can get good seats and sit together?

Enjoyed the movie. Now I need to finish the book to see what the differences are :)

Here's my review of the book from two years ago. Apparently I loved every second of it ;-) http://katekintailbc.livejournal.com/85427.html

It's been two years since I read the book, but I liked the movie. I still like the versions of each character in my head much more than the actors. Some rune info: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/335/3/8/tattoo___runes_i_by_bhanesidhe-d1hh5rs.jpg

Are we going to meet our front of the theater, or in a specific area?

    August 22, 2013

    • KateKintail

We'll meet just outside the theater and go in to claim spots when it opens. I'll bring a few pieces of paper with DADA on them to serve as signs.

I read the book a few years ago. I'm going to try so hard to get the book re-read in time! Maybe I should just re-read my review of it from when I read it the first time? heehee Either way, I just purchased my ticket. Can't wait to see this with you all, whether you've read the book or not :-)

There's a showing at 11am and one at 1:50pm. My vote goes for 11am so we can have a late lunch at 1pm after the movie instead of an early dinner at 4. Of these two times, does anyone else have a preference?

      I vote for 11am

I would love to discuss this with someone who has been in the fandom longer than I have, but, I understand that the slide at 0:50 refers to Cassandra Clair (Clare). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTYadVjuvlo

so throwing the convo topic out there. anyone remember the draco trilogies? i never read it until last year, when i got really bored and wanted to see what the fuss back then was all about. then i made myself read mortal instruments and infernal devices. the first few books were slightly worst than her fanfics, then they got better and then sank again. it's like a sign wave. i remember there was one scene towards the end of the 2nd MI book when she made a tackless hp joke. =/

I don't remember that part! I actually really liked the first few MI books, then I thought they went downhill, then I thought the last one that came out was rather good. But I adore the ID series much more than MI.

I actually started off with the ID series, and felt it imitated the ever popular tween romance love triangle too much but still enjoyed it none the least. the third book was written a lot more like the MI books where she disperse the focus onto other characters. the whole plagiarism scandal aside, her evolution as a writer is interesting. by the way draco's limmerick is finally properly cited in the clockwork princess

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
