First Year Boat Ride & Start-of-Term Feast

Harry, Ron, and Hermione's magical journey at Hogwarts started with a boat ride across the Black lake. Join us for our own first-year boat ride and picnic welcome feast at Riverbend Park in Great Falls, VA! Bring a picnic dinner for yourself and have a magical evening next to the Potomac River.

Boating Information: Boats available for rent are rowboats, canoes, single and tandem kayaks and start at $15 for 3 hours. Single kayak renters only must be certified with Riverbend Park to rent. All materials are supplied. No more than 3 people per boat. No children under 35lbs allowed in boats. An adult of 16+ must ride in each boat. River conditions apply (updated as date gets closer).

Park Information: Free admission (a donation of $2/car can be paid at Visitor's Center) provides beautiful scenery, access to miles of trails, and access to Visitor's Center and picnic areas. Picnic areas come equipped with charcoal grills (bring your own charcoal) and picnic tables.

Wizard wear is encouraged! Just be aware that we are outside, so things may be muddy/get wet depending on the weather that week.

Other things to do at the park: Trails are open for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The Visitor's Center has a snack bar and exhibits that are open from 10am-5:30pm during boating season.

We plan to return the boats at 4:30 and settle down to eat at 5:00.

Unlike previous events held at a park,

we are not reserving a picnic area or boats,

so please be flexible and be ready to "go with the flow"!

It was a lot of fun! Hopefully we can do it again (though I think we'll all get canoes first!)

A big thank you to Michelle for doing the leg work for this event. We couldn't have asked for better weather. Boating is fun - even when you aren't going backwards - or in circles. We even got the complete VIP tour after our shady picnic!

Thanks for the info, Michelle. It is always good to have options.

Another option for the picnic portion of the evening is to have pizzas delivered to the park. There are a few places in the town of Great Falls that will deliver. Romantica has large pizzas for $10. Just a thought if anyone wanted to go that route.

Yay boating! Can't wait to see everyone! Remember to bring money for boat rentals and some snacks are available at the Visitor's Center. SO EXCITED!

Just a reminder that this is a picnic event. You should bring your own food, drink and utensils.
