We'll meet at the Conservatory of the United States Botanic Gardens in Washington, D.C., at noon and look around there for about an hour. Think of it as a self-guided Herbology class! Info: http://www.usbg.gov/
Then we'll head to the National Mall (a stretch of it probably between the American Indian Museum and the National Gallery of Art to fly kites. It's recommended you bring a kite that makes you think of Harry Potter, just for fun, but that's certainly not required. (Last time we had several owls, a dragon, a Harry Potter, and a pegasus). If you're coming just for the kite flying and picnic, find us on the mall at 1:30 p.m.
We'll also have a picnic there. Bring whatever you want to snack on and if you want to bring something to share with everybody, that's great as well! Again, we'll be on the part of the National Mall near the Capitol building at 1:30 p.m.
In case of rain:
We'll still meet at the Botanic Gardens and look around there for an hour or so. Then we'll decide where we want to go eat. There are some dining options not too far away (we could eat at the American Indian Museum, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, or Cafe 59, for example). If you're coming just for lunch, find us at the Botanic Gardens at 1 p.m. and have your say on where we'll eat.
Federal Center Metro. Exit the station, walk north (left) along Third Street SW for two blocks, cross Independence Avenue and continue one more block to Maryland Avenue. Look toward the Capitol and you will see the glass dome of the Conservatory. The Conservatory entrance is on Maryland Avenue. Map: http://www.usbg.gov/sites/default/files/images/location_map.jpg
