Botanic Gardens, Kite Flying, and Picnic

We'll meet at the Conservatory of the United States Botanic Gardens in Washington, D.C., at noon and look around there for about an hour. Think of it as a self-guided Herbology class! Info: http://www.usbg.gov/

Then we'll head to the National Mall (a stretch of it probably between the American Indian Museum and the National Gallery of Art to fly kites. It's recommended you bring a kite that makes you think of Harry Potter, just for fun, but that's certainly not required. (Last time we had several owls, a dragon, a Harry Potter, and a pegasus). If you're coming just for the kite flying and picnic, find us on the mall at 1:30 p.m.

We'll also have a picnic there. Bring whatever you want to snack on and if you want to bring something to share with everybody, that's great as well! Again, we'll be on the part of the National Mall near the Capitol building at 1:30 p.m.

In case of rain:
We'll still meet at the Botanic Gardens and look around there for an hour or so. Then we'll decide where we want to go eat. There are some dining options not too far away (we could eat at the American Indian Museum, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, or Cafe 59, for example). If you're coming just for lunch, find us at the Botanic Gardens at 1 p.m. and have your say on where we'll eat.

Closest Metro:
Federal Center Metro. Exit the station, walk north (left) along Third Street SW for two blocks, cross Independence Avenue and continue one more block to Maryland Avenue. Look toward the Capitol and you will see the glass dome of the Conservatory. The Conservatory entrance is on Maryland Avenue. Map: http://www.usbg.gov/sites/default/files/images/location_map.jpg

We've had a change of schedule and have to head back to Pennsylvania a bit early. Wish that we could have made it!

We aren't going to make it to the Botanical Gardens but should be there before 1:30 for kite flying.

I am wearing my BRIGHT YELLOW Hufflepuff t-shirt, so look for that if you need to find me! I'll be at the National Gallery of art before the gardens and I'll probably have my phone off when inside so I don't disturb people, but I'll turn it on when I walk over if you need to get in touch with me. Otherwise I'll see you at the Maryland Avenue entrance to the Botanic Gardens at noon or at 1pm or somewhere on the National Mall after 1:30.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to make it. I've got to work until 4:30 today. I'm sure you guys will probably be gone or packing up by then. Have fun :)

Just FYI, I metroed to DC today (Saturday) on the Yellow & (a bit of the) Red lines and had no delays at all. So definitely adjust your routes if your lines have any overlap with the weekend track maintenance.

My legs & back are still giving me fits, so I probably won't make it.

If you forget to bring a kite the Air & Space Museum has a ton of them. (OK not cheap. <g>) I got my last kites from BJ's Warehouse.
BTW street parking in DC is free & unregulated on Sundays. But to get a good spot you need to be down there before the museums open at 10.
Bring gloves to hold your string reels with. (& band-aids for when you forget & the fast moving string cuts into your fingers. )

I noticed at Wal-mart the other day they have a range of cheap kites from $1-$10 if anyone still needs a kite.

Anyone have a good source for reasonably priced kites? Not impressed with what I'm seeing on Amazon.

Sorry to say I'll miss this as I'm still in Afghanistan, but look forward to seeing you all again once I return in mid-May. BTW - Started HP&TPS on my flight here & finished Deathly Hallows a few days ago.

Sounds like a great day! Love Botanic Garden and it's been too long since I've flown a kite.
