17th Annual Pedal the Parkway

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY CANCELED DUE TO BUDGET CONCERNS WITHIN THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. I AM STILL PLANNING ON LEADING A RIDE THAT DAY. MEETING TIME AND PLACE WILL REMAIN THE SAME. YOU'RE WELCOME TO ONLY RIDE OUT AND BACK ALONG THE COLONIAL PARKWAY A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 16 MILES. OR, YOU CAN JOIN ME FOR A LONGER DISTANCE. WE USUALLY EXIT THE PARKWAY AT JAMESTOWN HISTORICAL PARK AND JUMP ON THE CAPITAL TRAIL AND RIDE OUT TO THE CHICKAHOMINY RIVER BRIDGE. UPON RETURNING ON THE CAP A DISTANCE OF APPX. 20 MILES INCLUDING THE POWHATAN CREEK TRAIL WE RIDE THE JAMESTOWN TOUR ROAD WHICH IS ABOUT 7 MILES. AFTER THAT STRETCH WE HEAD BACK ALONG THE PARKWAY TO OUR STARTING POINT COVERING A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 45 MILES. AFTERWARD WE ALWAYS HEAD TO MAURIZIO'S FOR SOME GOOD FOOD! I WOULDN'T SUGGEST THIS RIDE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN AS THERE IS MODERATE VEHICLE TRAFFIC AND SEVERAL HILLS. HOPE TO SEE A BUNCH OF YOU ON THIS RIDE.

A handful of us finished with 45 miles of biking under a gray sky and a headwind that was pretty tough in a few sections. A good day of biking!

The headwind WAS pretty trying in many places. 45-46 miles is way over my limit, but I made it! Great group of friends!

Sorry to bail at the last minute. Took a spill on my bike today and messed up the front tire. Won't be able to get it fixed in time for tomorrow.

Easy Directions, Take I64 west to exit 242A Rt. 199. Follow Rt.199 to S. Henry St. and turn right onto Newport Ave. Follow Newport toward Nassau St and turn right into the parking lot just before Nassau St. Look for my blue Jeep Wrangler.

I'll see everyone bright and early tomorrow morning!

Okay guys, the "Unofficial" Colonial Parkway ride is next weekend. Please refer to the info above as to meeting place and time. Your welcome to attend and ride any distance your comfortable with. If your NOT planning to attend please remove your name so I'm not standing around like a monkey in the parking lot waiting for you. As always, we'll eat at Maurizzo's after the ride. There will be traffic on the Parkway but it won't be overwhelming. There's still plenty of room for additional sign ups.

I'm still in! And sorry for not contacting you. It's been...not so good the last few days. Family issues. We'll talk Saturday in person about it.

I am not going to be able to come. I have to pick up my daughter from a sleepover much earlier than expected. I had originally planned to bring her.

There is no numbered address. The parking lot is on Newport Ave. just before Nassau. Parking lot is on the right down a short hill. Look for my blue jeep Wrangler.

Totally forgot I'm running in the Color Me Rad 5K this day.

Scott, we don't have anything quite like your NITE Ride. I believe there might be a night ride or maybe a night run in the Richmond area I'm not sure. I, on the other hand am always up for a night ride. I ride the Colonial Parkway often at night and sometimes the tour roads. If you do the whole route out and back you'll travel 45 miles or a bit more.

Battlefield Tour is not far from me (if that's what you mean...maybe 5 miles or so away). I've ridden there twice last year, but never rode the Parkway. I've driven there before all the way out to the point & back.

I have a mountainbike with on road-off road tires, so I generally ride around 20-25 miles or so. I have a CygoLite 450 headlight & strobe tail lights as well as blue LED's on the frame so I can be well seen at night. I prefer to ride at night because of less traffic & a cooler breeze on a hot night. You can relate to that!

Maybe some of us can schedule a night ride around the area sometime. I couldn't lead the group because I don't know the area that well, but I'd be comfortable enough being in the lead group. I suppose I'll put the idea out there for a Saturday night/Sunday morning ride to see who bites. You never know. They're a lot of fun!

Still looking forward to this ride, although it has been "officially" unofficially cancelled. I knew about this ride months ago as I was searching for a large group ride possibly at night time just like I attended each year while I lived in Indiana. That event was called the "N.I.T.E. Ride" in Indianapolis. Look it up! It's like no other bike ride in the country! Thousands of riders, prizes, activities, games, police presence to shut off downtown Indianapolis to vehicle traffic for us, a live band & good food afterwards...ahhh I'm missing that already!

Anyways, I hope to see many of you there that Saturday!

It's true, due to budget issues the official ride is canceled but I'm still planning to lead the ride. We'll just have to contend with the traffic.

The Parkway ride is fast approaching. How many are planning to include the extra miles? Jamestown Island, Capital Trail, Powhatan Creek Trail, and back along the Parkway. Total of 43/45 miles.

Is that 40 miles one way or round trip?!

If this event needs a orgainizer I don't mind doing it unless someone else is interested.

We generally bypass the Jamestown Entrance Fee.

    October 12, 2012

  • Rick H.

As I've done the past 2 years. Anyone interested we'll also include the Jamestown Island Tour Road and the Capital Trail out to the Chickahominy River Bridge. Total distance is 40-42 miles of pretty easy travel with a couple of hills on the Parkway. We'll eat at Marritzios on Rt.60 after the ride. Great food (GARLIC KNOTS!) And they don'y mind sweaty bikers. If your not up to the complete 40 miles join us for what you can.
