Overnight Backpacking Appalachian Trail

Come on out and enjoy an early Winter backpacking trip. We'll depart from the Burger King on Rt.17 in Newport News at 7:30am and head toward Rockfish Gap/Afton Mt. The hike will be along 5 miles of graded trail with pretty easy up and down travel passing several nice little creeks and some cabin remains. As always, we'll eat lunch at Lunchbucket Rock and then head downhill toward Mill Creek and Paul Wolfe Shelter. If you want to minus the weight of a tent you can sleep in the shelter just be prepared for various bodily noises including snoring!

You would need normal overnight gear, tent/tarp, sleeping bag/ground pad, a mix of clothing for cool to cold conditions, rain jacket, food, cooking gear (if you don't have a stove there should be enough to share.) Water filter/treatment (I use Aqua Mira), if you sleep cold you might want to include some of those chemical hand/body warmers.

This is an easy hike, just enough uphill to warm you up and a couple of views across the valley. This hike will give you a chance to see how you handle the cold in a safe environment. Give me a call[masked] if you have any questions.

Wow, we really picked a great weekend to be in the back country. Day time temps were low 60's and after the sun set behind the hills it never seemed to drop below mid 30's. We enjoyed a great fire and stories for several hours and bedded down to a moon that while not full was still very impressive. Calm winds until early morning and the gently cascading of Mill Creek blocked out the snoring from the women tenting below us (just joking!) Sunday's hike out was under a perfect blue sky. Had a mix of skill levels from HRO and TATC. with a few on their first hike in 20 years. Had such a good time I might try and squeeze a hike in Jan. I really enjoyed meeting the new folks and hope that you all had a good time.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
