Merchants Millpond is one of North Carolina’s rarest ecological communities featuring lofty bald cypress trees, luxuriant growths of Spanish moss, and abundant wildlife, including the elusive alligators which inhabit the area. Escape the hectic pace of life as we journey by kayak and canoe into this remote and undisturbed area, a place that embodies the spirit of adventure!
We will meet Saturday morning at 10:00 am in the parking lot of the park’s Visitor Center located at 176 Millpond Road, Gatesville, NC. Travel time from the Peninsula and Southside is estimated to be less than an hour and a half. After registration we will proceed to the park boat ramp for final preparations before launching.
Paddle time Saturday on the millpond is estimated to be 2+ hours depending on interest. Kayak/Canoe campers are responsible for transporting their own supplies and equipment to the reserved paddle-in primitive campsite. This includes food, water, clothing, tent, e.t.c. Water is available at the launch area but must be transported to the campsite. Paddlers should have all safety related equipment on their boat. A fire pit with cooking grate is available at the campsite. A nearby pit toilet is also available for use.
On the day of the event a fee of $2 per person will be collected to cover the cost of the campsite. Canoes are available for rent at $20 for a 24-hour period. We are only guaranteed to have three boats available for our group. The remaining 13 canoes, and 8 kayaks are offered to the public on a first come first served basis. Those not reserving one of the guaranteed boats may want to consider arriving earlier to make sure they can secure a rental. All boat rentals include paddles and life vests.
