Wild Caving Lost World Caverns, WV

Belly crawl, squeeze and get muddy during this Wild Caving tour in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The trip will start with about a 4 1/2 hour drive leaving from Newport News at noon on Saturday, January 5 to Buckhorne Campground in Clifton Forge, Va. The campground has tent camping available, with 2 tents per spot. Cost for tent spot is $19, so about $10 per person. Please call the campground and reserve your campsite. They also have small RV trailers available for rental for $35 per night if you prefer to sleep indoors, sleep 2-4 people. See www.buckhorne.com Use the comments section to ask if anyone wants to share a trailer with you, or rent it for yourself. Whether you are tent camping or wanting to rent one of their trailers, call and reserve your site as soon as possible to ensure availability.

The next morning we will arrive at nearby Lost World Caverns by 9:30am. We will meet our guide to descend underground and begin a 4-6 hour excursion through Lost World Caverns.  This is a commercial cave that has walking tours, but for adventurers a guide takes you deeper into the dark depths of the cave for an authentic caving experience including going through parts named Birth Canal, Squeeze Box, and The Drain.

The only light will be the headlamp, and scrambling, climbing, crawling through tight spaces, and getting muddy will be required. Do not sign up for this event if you are claustrophobic!! Physical fitness and agility is required for this event. You must belly crawl in extremely tight spaces. Consider your body size and physical ability when determining if this trip is for you, and if you have issues with being in closed, dark spaces please don't sign up for this trip. No caving experience is required and a guide will be there to see that we are safe.

Temperature in caves stay the same year around, about 50-55 degrees. You will be muddy and dirty afterwords, bring a complete change of clothes for after and a trash bag.

Gear list
-Hiking boots (no tennis shoes!)
-long pants/shirt (coveralls are good)
-tent
-sleeping bag
-food/water for night of camping, snacks/lunch for next day (guides provides some food in cave)

***You must also bring an extra full set of clothes to the cave, including a change of shoes!!

Helmet, gloves, knee pads, and headlamp will be provided, no vertical gear required.

This is an adventuresome, authentic, guided wild caving adventure-don't miss out if you think you can handle it.  Caving will end around 4pm, we will go get some dinner, and will be back in Hampton Roads area by around 10pm on Sunday, January 6th.

Pay upon arrival at the cave.
Cost caving tour is $70 per person

Includes free CD with pictures of your expedition

For those carpooling, please bring $20 per person in cash for gas money for the drivers which will be collected at the carpool location before departing.

Meet at carpool location by 11:30 am on Saturday in Newport News. Location info posted in Comments section below.

This is a precursor to the more extreme trip originally planned at Organ Cave, which is in the same vicinity. Come to this trip for a slightly less intense experience to see if you're ready for Organ Cave in Feb or March. This trip is shorter and cheaper than the previous, but still a very highly rated wild caving experience.

Outstanding trip everyone! Great, fun group and an awesome 5 hours in the cave squeezing through holes and crawling through crevices. Can't wait to organize another one, and get ready for the more intense Organ Cave! Thanks to everyone who came out, and a big thank you to the drivers.

I think I'll opt out of the drinking next time but other than that it was awesome. Caving was definitely a workout but very fun. Plus you cant beat a free home cooked dinner. Good times and good people. Looking forward to that more challenging and over night cave.

A couple other items Lost World Caverns advises you to bring is a towel and trash bag. There are showers available for after the excursion, so bring a towel to dry off with, and a trash bag to throw your muddy clothes in.

Hi Alan, are their any more available camp sites to share or should I call and reserve one? Sorry for asking so late, haven’t camped in a while so to make sure I could cut it, tested sleeping in my back yard at night (30 degrees). One sleeping bag inside another -toasty warm. The tavern and campfire on saturday night sounds deluxe. Thanks

    January 3, 2013

    • Alan T.

We still have a couple tent sites available, and Maria has a bunk available still if you want to be indoors, and we have plenty of room in cars for you to ride with someone. Maria and Easton both have spots in their cars available. Hope you can still come! Let me know by tomorrow afternoon though if possible, thanks.

This sounds awesome, just found out of a friends gathering that is on this saturday, I am getting all of the details and times for this saturday gathering. Wanted to ask about the possibility of meeting up with the group at the camp sight that afternoon/night for the caving adventures the next day? I am trying to put together some options because this trip does sound awesome!!

    January 1, 2013

    • Alan T.

Craig, that would be no problem if you wanted to meet up with us there. There are also a couple people that have tent sites available for share, so you would not need to worry about reserving a tent site, you could just show up.

      January 1, 2013

  • Alan T.

Ok great. Looks like with me, Maria, Easton, Mia and Penny driving, there is a ride for everyone.

In my car: David, Jenna, Robin.
    Penny driving separate with Bill.
Easton driving with Peter and Tommy
Maria driving with Steve, & Catherine and Allen if they wish.
    Mia driving with her guest.
No response from Eric yet, so I'm going to assume for now he will be a no show. Thanks for everyone's cooperation in getting the carpool arrangements completed beforehand. This will make leaving on Saturday a lot smoother!

Also, what does everyone want to do that evening that we arrive in Clifton Forge? Plans were, we arrive at campground approx. 4pm, check-in, set-up tents/drop off gear in trailers, then go to Jack Mason's Tavern for dinner approx. 5:30pm for those interested. Jack Mason's Tavern is a restaurant/tavern that is the best rated place to eat in the small town of Clifton Forge. Pub with gameroom, large tv's, music, pool tables, fireplace, etc. After eating, we can all hang out at campground, find something local to do that evening, or we can all split up and do our own thing until morning. Any input?

    December 29, 2012

    • Alan T.

Yes, we'll designate one person's tent or trailer site as the group hangout area for those wanting to hang out around the campfire that night.

Hi, do we reserve a spot for carpooling from Newport News or can we just show up with gas money?

    December 28, 2012

    • Steve R.

ditto .... and just for the record I am also looking for a ride since my truck gets relatively poor gas mileage and only seats 2 comfortably.

      December 28, 2012

    • Alan T.

I am trying to arrange rides for everyone via an email I just sent to everone. I will post further info on this once I get responses, but if you just show up you should have no problem getting a ride.

The parts of the cave, like the Birth Canal, Squeeze Box and The Drain, are they a vertical or horizontal climb ?

    December 28, 2012

    • Alan T.

Everything in this trip is horizontal, no vertical and no gear required. Future trips to different caves will have vertical parts.

I will be going as well as 2 friends if there's room?. We will have 2 tents so well need our own spot I'm guessing. Is that something I need to reserve or do I just pay that when I get there as well?

    December 19, 2012

    • Alan T.

Easton, if your friends are not already Meetup HROA members, please have at least 1 of them join if possible. Currently, to ensure available space for Meetup members, the guest limit is 1. If you intend on bringing a guest, please update your RSVP to +1 by clicking on "Change RSVP". The reason for limiting guests is that our group reservation for the group caving trip I have already made is limited to 20, and I don't want to exclude any members that may decide to join in the next couple weeks. If you can't get 1 of your friends to join, and there is still another spot available by the RSVP cutoff date, then we can include your 2nd guest. As for the camping spot, please call the campsite and reserve your site as soon as possible. You can reserve by phone, but you are not charged until we check in that day. Thanks.

I had a question about this event.( Meet at carpool location by 11:30 am on Sunday in Newport News. Message me if you need directions to it.) What exact day are we leaving because I'm definitely interested. I have Saturday and Sunday off work. If anyone has a campsite with a tent spot left I will gladly take it. Do I need to reserve a spot for the cave diving? If so how do I go by doing that

    December 18, 2012

    • Alan T.

We leave on Saturday, arriving at the campsite that evening. On Sunday morning we drive to the cave from the campsite (about 45 min apart). Sorry about the confusion on that last sentence, that was a typing error. See carpool location info in adjacent post. Also, I think Tommy still has his site available for sharing. You do not need to make an individual reservation, as I have already made a group reservation. You only need to RSVP to this event, and then you pay on arrival.

Just reserved an RV camper. Super excited!

    December 18, 2012

  • Alan T.

For those of you that haven't reserved your tent site yet, David and Tommy both have sites available to share, with room for 1 tent. If you still need a tent site, you can get with David or Tommy to share, and split the $19 in half with them rather than reserving a separate spot.

    December 16, 2012

  • Alan T.

Remember everyone to make your reservations in advance for either a tent site or rent a trailer at the Buckhorne campground. Website is above. YOU are responsible for calling and making your reservations in advance. Please post a comment on here when you have reserved your spot. 2 tents per spot, so some of you can get together and share a spot, or rent one of their available trailers together. Thanks everyone!!

    December 3, 2012

    • Penny H.

Alan - I reserved the small RV. The website says it sleeps 2-4 people, but when I called to reserve and asked, they said it has 2 bunks. I offered Bill the 2nd bunk.

Do you know body size limitations such as inches around or a woman's clothing size that might get stuck in a tunnel? LOL This looks like an exciting thing to do before getting bogged down with tax season.

    November 21, 2012

    • Alan T.

Beth, the best thing I can tell you is go to the pictures link in the above comment to see the types of things you would be doing so you can judge personally. There's no set limit, but it does take physical fitness and agility.

      November 22, 2012

Due to several messages of interest regarding this trip, but many concerns and issues with the intensity, cost, and date of the trip, I have changed the location, date, and details. This much cheaper but still intense trip will serve as a precursor to Organ Cave at a later date. The date has changed to Sat and Sun so work isn't an issue for people, and the cost has decreased to only $80 for cave tour and campground! Hope to see a lot more sign up now!!

    November 18, 2012

    • A former member

sorry to hear its been changed(except for cost), but hopefully this will still be a fun trip. my only concern is that its quite a ways to go for only a 4 hr. tour. like you, hope more sign up. also, if i have a few friends who arent members of this group or meetup, but would like to come along, are they welcome?

      November 18, 2012

    • Alan T.

Tommy, sorry for the change, but we will definitely do the original Organ Cave trip not too long after this one, but this will be a fun trip too. It is very highly rated and features much of the same stuff as the other trip, but only about 5 hours instead of 7. It is a long ways to go, but we will be camping the night Saturday, so at least the driving is spread out, and we can have a good time at the campsite, and maybe go out to do something in town that night for those interested (eat/drink, explore Lewisburg, bowling?). You are welcome to bring friends, but I would prefer if you limited it to 2 for now, since the trip is over a month off, so if a lot more Meetup people sign up they don't get turned away. Just update your RSVP to add guests. Thanks!
