Update From The W3C Performance Working Group and Challenges

The mission of the Web Performance Working Group is to create standards to enhance aspects of Web application performance of user agent features and APIs. Some of them are already deployed in today's major browsers, like Navigation Timing or Page Visibility. This presentation presents the status on our ongoing work as well as the latest proposals on improving Web performance. It will also present some of the common pitfalls of Web Applications and discuss potential way forward to improve the performance of the Open Web Platform.

Philippe Le Hegaret heads the W3C Interaction Domain, which produces front-end Web technologies including HTML5, CSS3, SVG, WOFF, or Web APIs. He is currently a participant in the Web Performance Working Group and organized the W3C workshop on Video on the Web in 2007. Until July 2008, Philippe lead the W3C Architecture Domain, which produced the W3C Core technologies in the area of XML, Web Services, and Internationalization. He is a former Chair of the Document Object Model (DOM) Working Group and co-edited some of the DOM specifications.

Startup Institute is an 8 week, full-time career accelerator for people looking to build their skills and get a job at a startup. We train people in four different areas: web development, product and design, technical marketing, and sales and business development. Our goal is to align passion with profession and usher students into a career they love. We have a track record of success as 9 out of 10 people that complete the program get a job within 3 months of graduating.

Thanks to the Startup Institute for sponsoring pizza and beverages.

Very meaty and technical. I was pleased that speaker was willing to discuss features that were probably not going to be implemented. Still would like performance changes to monitor memory footprint.

Very technical and geared more towards developers than designers.

I'm curious if the Performance Working Group explores network layer acceleration technologies such as QUIC and SPDY, or if members have working experience with these or similar?

Be sure to bring a photo ID to get into the Microsoft N.E.R.D Center for the event. We still have plenty of space. If you have someone you want to invite do it ASAP. I will be closing RSVP registration for 5pm. See you all shortly.
