Live Code an HTML5 Game in One Hour with Iker Jamardo

Live Code an HTML5 Pong Game in an hour with Iker Jamardo: Back to basics, with a twist

Iker Jamardo, VP of Engineering at Ludei, will be building a pong game from scratch starting with the basics of any html5 game, covering structure, elements, collisions, and finishing up with A/B testing and ads. To add more to the challenge, he will demonstrate how to implement a leap motion device, Android OUYA console and game controllers.

Get ready to bring the good ol' pong to a whole new level, dive into html5 game development and learn about the possibilites and best practices. The game will be executed across multiple devices (browser, Android, iOS, FirefoxOS, Tizen, etc.)

Note: We are aiming at creating an interactive environment and will be involving the audience in the Live Code.

About Iker:

Software Engineer with a solid background in real time graphics application development in fields like videogames, virtual and augmented reality and multimedia. Iker has a passion for software architecture and have been a university professor and researcher for about 10 years. He's been in the videogame industry for 4 years now trying to push the HTML5 gaming community; he is behind the cocoon framework (a service oriented framework) and cocoonJS.

I really enjoyed this presentation. (As an aspiring game developer, I was hoping to see how Iker was going to include advertising in the game.) I guess I can read through the code...

Thank you all for coming and for your feedback! Shout out to Iker who once again proved to be a great presenter. The venue was super cool, big thanks to Mozilla. We'll post the video on youtube and provide the link shortly. Stay tuned for the next HTML5 Live Code.

Enjoyed the meetup. Great and enthusiastic presenter. Given the time constraints, Iker did a great job.

Learned a bunch. The stated goal not attained, maybe next time!

Excellent! I really enjoyed it. Iker's enthusiasm for game coding was infectious. I have experience with a handful of how-to articles and books on HTML5/Canvas game development (including at least two that implemented Pong), but watching it live really helped to re-enforce my knowledge and give me a sense that I really do understand this tech, ... especially when Iker started rushing in the end, and I was still able to follow along.

Is there a new URL where I can download the code to study it?

I really enjoyed the presentation. It got a little rushed towards the end due to time constraints but otherwise really good.

Folks, there's a giants game tomorrow at 7pm which is in close proximity so keep this in mind especially regarding street parking. Also, it'd be great if you can update your RSVP in case you can't make it anymore as space is limited. cheers and see you tomorrow!

Are you actually using LiveCode or are you just using HTML5?

    June 23, 2013

    • Rick E.

So to clarify, the name of this meeting should NOT lead anyone to assume it has anything to do with the programming lanugage LiveCode, right? http://en.wikipedia.o...

      July 5, 2013

    • Vera H G.

Correct, it's an html5-focused group and not related to LiveCode programming language.

  • Rick E.

    Suggestions for parking (cheap)?

    July 5, 2013

    • Vera H G.

Rick there should be street parking available in the area. No meters after 6pm but plan to spend some time finding a spot near by.

Unfortunately, won't be able to attend this event. Would it be possible to get the coding portion of the event screencasted for download?
