Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I will be setting up a leaflet distribution operation this Wednesday or Thursday around 1 pm. We will target neighborhoods in the 9th Ward, an area that has historically been a high breeding ground for dog- and cock-fighting. I will also invite Fox 8 TV to join us. I will contact all of you with an exact location and date within the next 48 hours. I am also enclosing an email from a 9th Ward resident that details many of problems that have existed for a long time. In the meantime, please let me know which day is better for the majority of you.
Being a lover and protector of all animals, I agree that this is a horrible practice (referring to dog fighting) by humans without souls who are capable of doing anything for money or a thrill. By me living in the Lower 9th ward for 30 yrs. I 've seen my share of this and have rescued a few Pits who were apparently victims of dog fights. Also have come across some who were obviously losers, deceased, tossed on the side of the road like litter. We've not had any incidents in quite some time but I'm always on alert and prepared to do whatever I have to, to stop this practice. I have a question. Is there anything going on to stop cock fighting. and have ya'll gotten any complaints of cock fighting in Lower 9? I have the understanding that it is illegal in La. now. What are the penalties and are they being inforced? A growing number of households in this area have backyard chickens. Many of which were adopted from the streets Post Katrina. Chickens left behind who survived have been thriving in this area of lush vegetation etc. Folks have been feeding and taming them and offering shelter from the elements. In return their human partners are being blessed with gifts of fresh eggs. Lately coops are being broken into and the roosters have been stolen. including my "Rizzy" who I hatched from an egg. His parents were both rescue chickens with disabilities. Some predator broke into the pen and killed his parents. We brought the eggs and incubated them and Rizzy was our rooster. They also took a bin of food and bale Also folks who have been feeding free range chickens,(stabilized flock) have been losing roosters. We hear that there is a person or persons fighting roosters in this area but no one wants to talk or they really don't know. I do believe that there is more criminal activity surrounding dog fighting. Since roosters are the main sex of chickens being stolen, our 1st thought is they want to raise to raise them to fight or use them for dog fighting bait. Chickens, to some, may be "low man on the totem pole" but it hurts us deeply to imagine that our little friends who have let us know so cheerfully when a new day begins and who defends his flock of hens so bravely may have fallen prey to one of these soulless beings.
I don't know if this is or was the right forum for this but I had to respond. We are on alert for any kind of animal abuse and will do whatever we must if we discover any; and please, please let us know if you have any info on cockfighting in lower 9. I'm still trolling the streets looking for my Rizzy. Thanks.
Lastly, please let us know if you any doghouses, pet carriers, supplies, pet food or bowls that you would like to donate to this program. We will distribute the supplies to low-income, qualified pet owners. You can also volunteer by writing letters to area businesses on our behalf. Please let us know if and when you can volunteer. Sincerely, Jeff
