Dear Friends of the Humane Society of Louisiana,
I encourage all of you to contact us to see how you can make a difference?with our group and in your community.? Just volunteering a few hours a week or month can make a lasting?difference.? Also, please note the following two events on your calendars.? First, we will be co-hosting an Equine Education Workshop and Open House with Rescue Ranch on Saturday, on May 16th, in Belle Chasse.?
Second,?we will be hosting our first annual Veggie Fest the following day on Sunday, May 17th.? I hope that most of you will attend one or both events.? To register for the Equine Education Workshop, please contact me at this email address.? Below is summary of these events that appeared in today's Times Picayune:

On May 16, an open house and an Equine Education Workshop will be held at the Rescue Ranch, 10913 La. 23, Belle Chasse (the old River Oaks Academy School site). Open house will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a workshop will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Call 504.818.6120.

The workshop, on the proper care and upkeep of horses, will be hosted jointly with the Humane Society of Louisiana (HSL). It will cover health issues as well as the nutritional and exercise needs of horses, and includes a tour of the Rescue Ranch. The workshop fee is $15, including refreshments and handouts. Call 1.888.6.humane to apply for a scholarship for this fee.

The Rescue Ranch and HSL have worked together on recent cases of horse abuse and neglect. HSL received more than a dozen complaints of neglect and starvation of horses in Louisiana recently.

"It appears that the deteriorating economy is causing some horse owners to cut back on feed and stop providing adequate medical care for their animals," said HSL's Jeff Dorson. For more info or to help, call 1.888.6.humane.

On?May 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., The First Annual New Orleans Veggie Fest to promote a plant-based diet and lifestyle will be held at Cafe Bamboo, 435 Esplanade Ave., New Orleans. Admission is $5 (free for children under age 2). Expect vegetarian food, vendors, cooking demos and recipes, speakers and more. The admission is $5. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Louisiana.
