Dear Friends,
?
We have reached our goal of registering 12 exceptional?members to serve on our Emily Events Committee.? This committee will use the story of Emily, a severely abused dog, to highlight the need to help thousands of others like her.?Emily's?story will be?repeated in a series of special fund-raising events held during one week in July.
?
I am inspired by?the people?who have registered?and the?vision for this committee.? In a?very short period of time, we have attracted some of the best people in our city.? We will be joined by:
?
Patricia Evans,?owner of Juliet's Home Furnishings,?where?our first meeting will take place.? Patricia has?agreed to serve as?our Honorary Chairperson.? Patricia knows the importance of?our work first hand.??Hunter, her beloved canine companion,?was brutally murdered by a neighbor just a few years ago.? The neighbor was found guilty of?aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, and yet?was?given a lenient sentence without jail time!??Our committee will keep Hunter's spirit alive with?a?special memorial service.
?
Valerie Cahill,?member of the board of the Port of New Orleans.? Valerie?registered?on Friday, gave a special donation on the spot, and has pledged to help us promote our vision throughout the city and state.?
?
Jamin Rothschild, head of hotel services for Harrah's Casino.? Jamin and her sister were also victims of violence earlier this year, when their truck and three dogs were stolen in broad day-light.? We worked?around the clock to solve the case and were eventually able to reunite the dogs with the Rothschilds.? We paid a $1,000 reward to the Good Samaritan who helped us?secure the?dogs' recovery.? The story of this?multiple canine?abduction and eventual recovery was covered extensively in the media.? All four TV stations and the Times Picayune covered the story as it unfolded on?consecutive nights a few months ago:
?
?
Dionne Charlet, freelance writer for Where Y'at Magazine and theatrical performer
?
I also intend to ask newly-elected New Orleans Juvenile Court Judge Tammy Stewart, and a member of our humane society, to?serve as the Co-chair of our?Emily Events Committee?.? Judge Stewart recently attended the Equine Education Workshop,?which we co-hosted with Rescue Ranch, and has pledged to send juveniles guilty of animal cruelty to sensitivity training at Rescue Ranch!!!
?
The list of powerful committee members is simply too long to include everyone at this time -
we have a talented?writer for technical journals, who is also writing?her first novel, a three-year law student, studying for her exams,?a hard-working?representative for Shark media, and a?personal effectiveness trainer and professional public speaker - just to?list the backgrounds of?a few other committee members. This is the group that will make a lasting and profound mark in our community.
?
Goals and Objectives:?
?
We plan on developing and overseeing a dozen or more events during one week in either the?third or fourth weeks in July, each referred to as an Emily Event, named after a dog?who was the victim of abuse.? Her story will highlight the thousands of other animals that are the target of violence.? Each year these Emily Events will increase in number and scope.? In a few years, I envision large banners announcing Emily Week and a list of dozens, maybe hundreds, of individuals and businesses participating in some way.? The?opportunities are endless.? I envision:
  • ?boy and girl scouts having an Emily Event dog wash
  • ?dozens of stores offering percentage of sales specials as Emily Events
  • ?a city-wide Emily run/walk
  • ?individuals?organizing?and hosting?Emily Event lemonade stands, yard sales, or backyard get-togethers
?
Even before we have officially announced our plans, several individuals and businesses have registered to host?Emily Events:
?
Our good friend and fellow animal advocate, Karen Adjmi, the co-owner of Earthsavers,? pledged her corporate support
?
Dr. Leslie Brown will host a?cocktail party, our flagship event, in the CBD
?
Jehan Strouse registered to host a vegetarian BBQ fundraiser at her home
?
Prima Donna's Closet registered to host an in-store?event
?
Buzz Weekly Magazine and radio host Jeff Crouere?have agreed to promote the Emily Events in its publication and on the air.? Jeff also interviewed me on his PBS show on Friday, and we spoke about the mission of the Emily Events.
?
Behind these events and the work of our committee is an effective structure that has been?built to respond to the hundreds of animal cruelty complaints we receive on an annual basis.? We are now able to do exactly what our primary goal has been:? use the resources of hundreds of people and a handful of experts?to solve crimes committed against animals.? An article in today's Times Picayune (Westbank Community Section) details some of our group's progress in this new?type of crime fighting:
?
?
?
And so, in a very short period of time, we have put together all of the pieces of?a puzzle?to form a?beautiful mosaic.? We have all been brought together for this mission that can now be fulfilled.? Not all of you can attend Tuesday's meeting - but we will certainly keep you all informed every step of the way.
?
Date and time of first committee meeting:? Tuesday, June 9th, from 7-8:30 pm
?
Location:? Juliet Custom Furnishings, 2108 Magazine Street, near Jackson Ave

Let this wonderful journey begin.........
