Dear Friends,
?
Here is a copy of our most recent news release.? We are responding to hundreds of calls for assistance and information each week, and we could use your help in keeping up with our workload.? We are looking for more volunteers to help us with these tasks:
?
1.? Collecting and/or donating tarps and umbrellas to offer shade to dozens of "backyard dogs" who presently have no shade or shelter.
?
2.? Placing collection boxes in small businesses around town.
?
3.? Collecting donated items, such as jewelry, hand-made crafts, gift certificates, and artwork that will be auctioned off throughout the summer.
?
Please email me at this address or call me at[masked] to volunteer.? One of our?mottos:? If a lot of people do just a little, we can?improve the lives of thousands of animals.
?
Sincerely,
?
Jeff

LONG LOST METAIRIE DOG RECOVERED IN FLORIDA: ?
MICROCHIP LEADS TO UNLIKELY REUNION
?
(Metairie) -- Amanda Wells adopted Bear as a puppy?in November 2004, while attending LSU.? Bear settled into a quiet life with Amanda, then evacuated with her during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. ?The pair traveled through Pensacola, Charlotte, and?Boston,?before finally settling down for a?two year stay in?Washington, DC. Bear stayed by Amanda's side, through all of the long trips and new places. In September of 2007, Amanda and Bear finally moved back to Metairie, to be closer to Amanda's parents.
?
Sadly, on December 12, 2007, ?Bear unexpectedly broke out through a front yard gate. ?Running away, he never slowed down, and though Amanda chased after him, she soon lost sight of her beloved dog. ?She drove around the neighborhood for hours, then subsequently put up flyers and searched for him to no avail. ?This would be the last time Amanda would see Bear for 18 months.?
?
Last week, however, Amanda got an unexpected?call from the Director of the Bay County Animal Control Department in Panama City, Florida. ?After picking up a stray dog, the shelter did a routine microchip scan on the animal. ?The information on the chip identified Amanda as his owner. ?Bear somehow traveled 300 miles to Florida over the last 18 months and had survived his ordeal!

Bear was scruffy, and his hair was matted, but he was otherwise in good shape, considering his incredible journey. The Bay County Animal Control Department also contacted the Humane Society of Louisiana, to help arrange transport for Bear back to Amanda's doorstep. ?The group agreed to help make the reunion possible, but Amanda made the drive to pick up her long lost friend herself.
?
?"This story has a happy ending because Amanda did the right thing and had Bear microchipped. Without the information embedded in that tiny chip, this reunion would never have taken place," says Jeff Dorson, Director of the Humane Society of Louisiana.? "Particularly now that hurricane season is upon us, we urge all pet owners to ?get their animals microchipped, so that they can be easily identified, should they ever become lost or separated," adds Dorson.?

The media is invited to hear the story of this incredible reunion and to visit with Amanda and her long lost best friend.?
?
WHAT:? The Reunion of Bear and Amanda!? The Humane Society of Louisiana will also welcome Bear home with ?gift basket of toys and treats!
?
WHERE:? Bear's grandparent's house, 3405 North Turnbull Drive, Metairie.
?
WHEN:? Monday, June 22, 12: 30 to 1 pm.
