Louisiana is the only state in the union that refuses the enforce the federal TED's law that protects sea turtles. Our governor, to protect the interests of the fishing industry, refuses to acknowledge the federal law or allow its enforcement in our state and surrounding waters, where turtles come to feed and breed each year! Because of this lack of oversight and enforcement, experts estimate that more than 50,000 sea turtles (six different species) drown in our fishing lines each year! Sadly, the public doesn't know these facts and there is no local or state grass-roots movement to address these issues!
However, several key staff members from the Sea Turtle Restoration Project (https://seaturtles.org/) are in town attending an international symposium on sea turtle protection and have invited our humane society to help their efforts by forming a local grass-roots committee on this subject. We'll be meeting tomorrow (Thursday, April 17th) at 12: 30 for lunch. Kindly let me know if you are interested in attending tomorrow's meeting or joining this committee.
