Discussion Group: The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker

The date and time for this meeting has changed!  Please update your RSVP if this affects your plans.  Thanks!

How much of human nature is defined by our genetics?  How much by our environment?  How have various dogmas have influenced our perception of human nature? Explore these topics in our discussion of Steven Pinker's book, The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature.

Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase at the Secular Hub. Hope to see you there!

We had an enjoyable discussion of a very interesting book. I think Pinker identified some very prevalent ideas.

I felt the topic was intimidating, neuroscience and evolutionary psychology demands a certain level of sophistication to understand and appreciate the mind as perhaps a neutral "box" and we perhaps begin life in this state. This was heavy duty reading and I voted and would have been more engaged with Sam Harris book "Lying." Oh well I at least tried.

I've had that book slated for reading for a century or two, but no time. Does anyone know if it's available in audio form? Last time I checked I don't think I could find it (as was the case with the "The Selfish Gene" as well).
