Join in our TED Talk Salon for a brain-stimulating presentation and lively discussion. A "video-style" book club for the curious world citizen.

*** Note to regulars: Room change! ***

This month's topic: The Power of Vulnerability by Brené Brown

Brené studies human connection -- our ability to empathize, belong, love. In this poignant, funny talk of over 11 million views, she shares insight from her research on vulnerability, courage, authenticity, resilience, and shame. Her talk shares her personal quest to know herself and her effort to understand humanity.

Recommended by a member--thanks!

Schedule (times are approximate)
3:30...Show the TED Talk, break into smaller groups to discuss
4:45...Whole group summary/further discussion
5:30...Event wraps up (we have the room until 6pm for continued socializing)

On the first Saturday of every month, we view a recorded TED Talk (of about 20 min.) from those posted at Talks are by a person notable in their field, who has interesting things to say. After viewing their presentation, we'll break into smaller groups and talk about the ideas raised (with the occasional tangent! ;-)

Talks are selected because they spark the interest of Rebecca, our TED salon moderator, and are likely candidates for good conversation. (Recommendations are welcome - email Rebecca.)

This is one of my favorite Ted Talks and I also own a DVD of her, an hour long presentation called, The Hustle For Worthiness. This takes it a step further and she talks of shame in Men and the addiction of perfectionism. It is a talk given to People that work in addiction studies and is so good. You can't buy or borrow the DVD anywhere anymore, I inquired. But, I have it! I love to share it, it's in another friends hands at the moment.

I have it in my hands again ... if you want to arrange a viewing sometime inside or outside of this meet-up, i'm game and look forward.

A suggestion for anyone wanting to organize this:- Go to the Upcoming page for our group, and near the top of the page click on "Suggest...". Before that, arrange a venue and pick a date (that doesn't conflict with another Humanist event) so you can post the details. You'll want to get in touch with Audrey Kingstrom, our coordinator, at some point, to get the event "published". Audrey will probably chime in here if I've missed anything.
