Winter Solstice Holiday Gala

Join us for a great evening of entertainment and camaraderie at our annual winter solstice gala.  Headlining our program is the renowned vocalist, Prudence Johnson, and guitar virtuoso Dean Magraw.  Their repertoire for the evening will lean toward Springsteen and Dylan.

Opening the program will be a talk by Sally Brummel, Planetarium Education and Outreach Coordinator at the Bell Museum.  She will present a visual exploration of the night sky entitled "Winter and the Cosmos." The images will depict astronomically what the solstice means in terms of the earth-sun relationship and take a look at earth's place in the cosmos by virtually traveling to the edge of the known universe.

The cost is $10 per person, payable at the door. Dinner reservations are now closed but everyone is welcome to attend the program beginning at 7pm.

The evening is also a fundraiser for the Bridge for Youth.  If you are able, please bring a donation in the form of check, cash or items selected from their wish list.  See our flyer for details.

Do join us for a delightful evening with friends and fellow humanists, atheists and free thinkers to celebrate the holiday season together.  This year's winter solstice festivities are hosted by Humanists of Minnesota and co-sponsored by Minnesota Atheists.

Excellent food, sociable table-mates, interesting cosmological talk, terrific music. And a ride, which made it all possible.

For all you nonbelievers asserting your right to celebrate, here's an article from the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/22/nyregion/during-religious-season-nonbelievers-assert-right-to-celebrate.html

If it helps anyone decide to attend, I can reveal that the vegan meal option will be Grilled Vegetable Ravioli. It will be served in marinara sauce with seasonal vegetables on the side. Sign up now if you haven't yet!

I was informed yesterday that it will probably not be the ravioli after all. There is egg in their pasta dough. But the chef will come up with something!

The name "Gala" rather implies a festive atmosphere I think. In the past folk looke really good over-all but it is not a tux sort of thing or a sweats and tennis shoes thing either. (Even though I have seen folk look really good in both those extremes) I like to think we will all enjoy a happy evening no matter what we wear. That's not specific, I fear, but hopefully you get the idea that if you dress to look good in your own estimation, nobody's likely to be at odds with you. Me? I've got a red silk shirt that gets out of my closet only once a year for the holidays. It feels fun to me.

I'd like to attend, but there's no bus service to Industrial Boulevard on Sundays. If someone could provide me a ride, it would be much appreciated. I live in the Phillips neighborhood near Franklin & Chicago Avenues in Minneapolis. If you can help, please contact me at <[masked]>. Thanks.

I neglected to notice that I'm ushering that night at the Jungle Theater, so I won't need a ride after all, but thanks very much, Audrey and Bob.

The Jungle extended its run, I moved my ushering gig, and I signed up online for the banquet. I'll email you, Audrey, about where to pick me up. Thanks.
