Volunteer with Humanists: Family Fun Night at Tubman Center

Join your fellow Humanists for Family Fun Night at Tubman Center West.  Once a month, we host an evening event for the residents who are staying in the shelter.  It is lot of fun and the residents really appreciate all of our efforts.  On this night, we will be making paper bag puppets and enjoying lucky green punch and cookies.

Volunteers will meet in the shelter at 6 pm.  The program runs from 6:30 to 8:30.  We will set up before the program, join the residents for the fun part and then straighten up after.

Afterward we will reconvene for friendly fellowship at the nearby Jackson's Coffee and Gelato, 822 W. Lake St, Minneapolis.

Parking is available in the lot at 3111 First Ave. South.  If that lot is full, we can park across 1st Ave. at the Police Station.

To enter Tubman, walk around the building from the parking lot to the Shelter Entrance on 31st Street.  Bertina, our site-based point-person, will meet us at this entrance.

Tubman is a secular non-profit dedicated to helping women, children and families struggling with relationship violence, substance abuse and mental health issues.   http://tubman.org/home/about-us/

Volunteers are expected to undergo training to help out at the Tubman Center.  For further information contact Nancy Somers at [masked]

I'd like to learn more about volunteering at the Tubman house tonight. I'm a secular humanist and I've been on the MN atheists mailing list for a few years but this is the first worthwhile event I've seen posted. I've worked with families before as a child care provider at the YMCA downtown, I've taught youth and adult sports, and I'd like to learn and listen to people whose lives are very different from my own. If you see a role for me tonight or in the next several months, let me know.

We are a group of Humanists, who have been trained by Tubman, and bring these Friday Family Fun nights monthly to the safe shelter in Minneapolis. The first step is to get the training. Unfortunately, you just missed a training in March. I will post a Meet Up for the next training, which will probably be in May. Meanwhile, feel free to contact Joanie Braun at[masked] or [masked] for further information. We would love to have you join us in the future!

So somehow I missed that it is Pi day for this event. On that note I was thinking it might be fun to have Pi t-shirts and pi pie. Thoughts or ideas?
