Re: [humanism-166] Do you want to be involved in this ?

The problem with this thread is that the discussion is not taking place in the right place on the internet.  Some of us are less savvy than others on how to use these internet sites--and the national Meet-up site creates some of the settings that we cannot change; there has been no intention to offend or violate anyone's preferences.  I ask everyone's indulgence as we try to redirect the conversation in a constructive way.

As has already been expressed, some people enjoy the political discussion and others do not.  I think most people can respect that.  Unfortunately, one innocent e-mail inquiry led to a thread that cannot be stopped automatically as long as someone keeps responding.  E-mail exchange is not the appropriate place for these topical discussions.  So please delete unwanted e-mails and for those interested in discussion, see below for good places for discussion.

There are two places our organization offers on-line discussion.  One is on our website (the Humanists of MN website--not our Meet-up site) where folks can respond to various topical posts on our blog--Humanist Views.  Here's the link.  http://humanistsofmn.org/

The second place is the discussion board on our meet-up site. But to participate in that most effectively, people have to manage their own settings for their account, I believe.  http://www.meetup.com/humanism-166/messages/boards/  I've not seen it used for a longer give-and-take discussion, but I think it is possible.

Thanks for your cooperation.  Audrey, Board Member and Community Coordinator, Humanists of MN

I for one am about ready to leave the group over this shit. This is not the appropriate place for this discussion. Telling me to fix it on my end when it shouldn’t ever have been given to me seriously? Humanists who don’t respect other humans desires? Can you say Hypocrisy? If this group is full of such people I will gladly leave it and find real humanists.

I enjoy the emails - those that find it annoying but want kept in the loop, please use technology and filter the email to auto archive or delete upon arrival and save as your YELLING :)

It appears there is some disagreement.  Some people enjoy the emails and banter, others are frustrated and annoyed by it.  There have been expressions of kindness and brotherhood, as well as virulent attacks on individuals and political groups. The contradictions don't end there.  In fact, this seemed to have started with an offer to provide a platform in which to express and share thoughts and political perspectives; this was quickly followed by expressions of anger and oppression. What does that tell us about human nature? Are we doomed? Is there hope? Is the answer within us or among us?  This has been very interesting and I believe worth pondering for some time.

One can simply not be a humanist and be involved in politics, unless it serves the humanist principals. Last time I checked, we're starving the poor, gutting medical for the poor and disadvantaged, destroying water supplies and padding the pockets of corporations, french-kissing republican asses and padding the pockets of tea party psychotics.  No thank you. If one truly wants to make a difference, volunteer your time, hold a hungry child while she eats, give a hand up and be truly a compassionate human.

We already know everyone is dissatisfied.

The important question is how to provide a real INCENTIVE for Congress
to change its ways (i. e. via blackmail, counter-lobbying, or other
forms of political extortion/manipulation).

No one does anything without an incentive (basic law of human nature).

So unless you have a new sack of candy to offer Congress, or can
credibly threaten to take away the ones it has, your trip is
pointless.

Sorry.
