Volunteering @ Houston Food Bank

Join Humanists of Houston as we work another Friday night shift at the Houston Food Bank main warehouse (houstonfoodbank.org).  Activities may include packing food boxes, re-packing bulk items, packaging rice or pulling “grocery” orders that local agencies will take to their communities.

Please note that the Houston Food Bank requires you to register individually online, print out their volunteer pass before you arrive, and arrive early to allow for orientation to the warehouse.  If you've volunteered at the warehouse before, you can use the same barcode pass or re-print it from the vss... website.

Here is the official message from the Houston Food Bank:

Before you volunteer:
1) Each volunteer must register online prior to their volunteer date. Please follow the link http://vss.houstonfoodbank.org to complete registration. [Detail note: on the registration screen, for "Institution" put "Humanists of Houston"; and for "Group" put "Humanists of Houston-4".]
2) Once registered, you will receive an email to activate your account and will also receive a Volunteer Pass — print this out and bring it with you to your shift.
3) All minor volunteers, age 17 and younger, must have parents complete the attached waiver and bring to their volunteer shift.
4) Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers must be at least 8 years of age.

Dress Code: Tennis shoes, jeans and t-shirt. No shorts or open-toed shoes are allowed for safety reasons.

Please do NOT bring personal items [bags or purses]. Carpooling is encouraged!

Finally, please wear your HOH t-shirt if you've got one!  I usually have a few with me for sale ($10), or visit our corner of Cafe Press, http://www.cafepress.com/hohshop.

Thanks to everyone who was able to make it out to the warehouse tonight! Hope you had a good time, and as always if you have feedback or ideas for future volunteering, message me or post in the discussion forum.

Got off work late. But I am on my way. Little bit of traffic on 45.

Okay, I didn't realize how long the drive was. I'm going to be reeeeeeally late.

I've emailed repeatedly and called Houston Food Bank because I still have not received my volunteer pass. I guess without it, I'm going to have to cancel. :(

No, you can still come out! Last time, they had staff and volunteers there to help people who couldn't get their automatic passes to be created, or print, for some reason.

I'll be late then, but I'll be there. :)

At home with a sick kiddo today. I hate having to cancel.

Sorry to hear that; hope to see you at the next event.

Here's an optional extra: the HFB has a featured food item each month for their Backpack Buddy program, and April is Mac & Cheese. Consider bringing along a box of mac & cheese to donate when you come out on Friday. (http://houstonfoodbank.org/volunteer)

Wait...I see! I'll receive the form from the Houston Food Bank website when they confirm my registration.

Julie, I'll buy 2 shirts from you if you have them.

I'm afraid my on-hand supply of shirts has gotten perilously low, so unless you want size small, I'm no help this week. But I'll take volunteers no matter what you wear. :)

      No problem!

My 17 year old will be volunteering with me, so I need to fill out the waiver. I'm not finding it on the page...help! lol
