This month we will be having a very special guest: Dr. Herb Silverman, President and Founder of the Secular Coalition for America and author of his recently released autobiography, Candidate Without a Prayer.

Please join us as Dr. Silverman shares his story of his high-profile battles with the Religious Right and his campaign to run for Governor of South Carolina as an open atheist.

After Dr. Silverman's lecture will be a reception with complimentary refreshments and a book signing, as well as an opportunity to purchase his book at a special price exclusively for the Houston freethought community.

This event is co-hosted by the Humanists of Houston and Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Also, please note that this month's event starts at 2 PM, one hour later than our regular start time.

Our City-Wide Monthly Gathering is the cornerstone of all HOH activities, where people from the entire Houston and surrounding areas are invited to come. Please remember the needy: As part of an ongoing program, we encourage everyone to remember to buy just ONE extra can when doing their shopping and set it aside, then bring these cans in with them to the Gathering for donation to the End Hunger network - thanks! Fantastic meeting with an admirable atheist activist as the main speaker.

This event was terrific. Despite the spotty rain in Houston, about 75 people turned out to hear Prof. Silverman talk about his experience. Herb answered questions then autographed and notarized copies of his book for some attendees. If you are so inclined, you can post a review of his book at Amazon dot com ( ) or Barnes & Noble ( )

Dr Silverman gave a hilarious account of his growing up and then his career as a Professor of Mathematics. It was during this time that he ran for Governor of South Carolina despite the clause in the S.C. constitution which barred atheists from state office. He eventually caused the law to be changed and became a notary public.

Dr. Herb Silverman was humorous, and critically to the point. Probably the best program the HOH has had yet. I suspect that the large turnout was not disappointed. Dr. Silverman reveals himself to be a hard working activist and a fine example of secular humanism.
