SPEAKER: Daniel Johnson
TOPIC: Discussion on Chapter 5 by John Henry : "Causation."
From "The History of Science and Religion in the Western Tradition: An Encyclopedia"

Brief synopsis from Daniel Johnson:

Causation is a big topic, and the article's author wisely restricts attention to a few specific aspects. He focuses on medieval theology, things that seem arcane to me and I suspect will get even more dismissive evaluation from folks with more secular leanings. But as I thought about the issues, many of the ancient ideas seem to have modern counterparts, even if not often talked about today in such theological language. For example, "occsionalism", the idea that God recreates the entire universe at each successive instant, seems related to ideas of discrete units of time currently being investigated in physics. So I hope we can read and discuss the Causation article not just as arcane history, although we should remember that it appears in a book titled "The History of Science and Religion in the Western Tradition: An Encyclopedia", but look beyond the past to the causes of the future.
