This is a group of intelligent, thinking folks of diverse backgrounds, ages, and stations in life. We are here to give people who are questioning the current trend in this country (toward theocracy!) a place to share their views and feel welcome. My favorite bumper sticker is "Question Authority"! Although the Cape Fear area does not have a "super" fundamentalist feel to it right now, we will be here to monitor and counter any efforts to insert superstition into the schools, government, etc., should this occur.
Come check us out - it's an informed, enthusiastic group. We try to go for the positive, rather than stand around bashing religion- but a good joke is always appreciated! Politically, we have a spectrum of opinions, but tend toward liberal views. We are organized as a non profit educational group and are a chapter of the American Humanist Association, so will stay out of politics as an organization, and focus on social and community educational activities.
If you would like to join, our membership application is available here, by clicking the link above to "About Us" and viewing the application on the Table of Contents or try this link: http://humanism.meetu... You can print this and mail it along with your dues to the address on the form. You can also pay membership dues or make a tax deductible donation via our PayPal account should you wish to support our efforts that way. Thanks to all who join!! Of course, any financial support is much appreciated. If our $25 dues are too much of a burden for you, please pay what you can. You are welcome to attend several events as a guest before joining.
Many of our meetings consist of a discussion or lecture presentation from 5PM to about 6:15PM on the second Sunday of each month, followed by a social hour with refreshments. Please bring something to share, as this is a pot luck style sharing of food and drink (non alcoholic and/or wine, etc. are both OK). We plan to bring in interesting speakers and invite our members to develop programs for presentation to the group. We also have a women only Lunch group - named the FLARES, as well as a Discussion group on Monday evenings several times a month - check out the calendar--- and Please let us know what interests you! One of our members moderates an addiction recovery group (focused on alcohol) which is not god centered- please check out the Unitarian church calendar for details. It is called SMART RECOVERY. We also have several purely social events a year, such as picnics, a Winter Solstice party, and other family friendly events.
