Re: [humanism-184] invocation

I am planning to be there and will try to get a slot on the "public comments" agenda. Hopefully Jason will not inject a political statement into his invocation, but I will not be limited from doing so in "public comments."

It is my intention to use my two minutes to denounce the attempt to force all society to conform to the fundamentalists' conception of what "traditional marriage" is and their appointing themselves to be its "protector" although nobody but themselves elected them to "protect traditional marriage." And the fundies do not tell us exactly what "tradition" it is they are defending.

There is no reason why others too should not get on that public comments docket. You get two minutes at the microphone. You gave time to make one or two points. You need to be prepared.

From past experience I know that the Council members will probably not pay attention to either the invocation or to the public comment speakers. They may not even look up from their paperwork. But you do get broadcast on cable television and even if the council members don't listen the audience will. And Jason will go on record in the Minutes for his invocation and when they cycle through the list his name will come up again and he will be invited back. Other Humanists will be doing this too in the new year.

Attempts have been made to abolish invocations but the courts have ruled that they may continue however the public agencies are obligated to treat everybody equally. In the past I made some progress toward getting atheists and the Hare Krishnas and Bahai's included. We cannot stop invocations but we can make sure they are not just an unchallenged vehicle for fundie propaganda.

Congratulations on being offered a chance to give the city's invocation/speech. That's a fantastic victory in itself. However, if you try to put a political statement in your invocation about prop 8 (not sure if your e-mail below says that you will), you may get barred from future invocations, so be careful.

You go, boyfriend.

This Monday at 2 pm, the San Diego City Council will decide whether or not to endorse the limits on marriage constitutional amendment (prop 8)

Every Monday, the council opens with an invocation, this Monday the council's invocation will be performed by HASD president and Humanist Minister Jason Frye.

Please join HASD in front of the City Council tomorrow at 1 pm to show your support and help us fight proposition 8.  State Constitutions should not be used to endorse hatred.

12th floor, 202 "C" Street in downtown San Diego

see you there
