“Having begun keeping a record of all his communications with God, nine-year-old child-evangelist Brother Sam suspects he’s been duped. When he’s conned into preaching at the family’s brush arbor revival, on whis- key-cooking Birch Blake’s land, young Brother Sam uses the opportunity to clear up some questions about right and wrong. Hilarious and provocative, “If the Ocean was Whiskey and God was a Duck” brings vividly to life the time, the place, and the people that produced Sam Singleton Atheist Evangelist.”
Since his conception in 2007, Brother Sam has amassed a large and devoted following on the internet and on tour. Patriarchs and Penises has been performed in more than 60 cities. “If the Ocean was Whiskey and God was a Duck” premiered at the Texas Freethought Convention in Irving, in October, 2010, and recently played to full houses in Washington DC, and other Eastern cities.
Though the Brother Sam character is noted for his liberal use of salty language, writer-actor Roger Scott Jackson points out that the 70-minute, one-act, “If The Ocean was Whiskey and God Was A Duck” is “Strictly PG.” He adds that “Patriarchs and Penises” is decidedly adult in nature and runs for about two hours, including an intermission.
“And don’t expect a lecture or a debate.” he says. “Don’t look for Richard Dawkins or Sam Harris. This is entertainment. For nonbelievers. Anyone who may be offended is invited not to attend. In fact, I’ll promise
to boycott their church if they’ll promise to boycott my show.”
