Memorial Service for Francis Mortyn

Memorial Service for Francis Mortyn

Francis Mortyn [masked]) was the former Executive Director of the Humanist Fellowship of San Diego and a member since its founding in 1982.

His life and long service to Humanism will be commemorated on Tuesday, April 9th at 4pm.

Francis was fond of attaching quotes to his emails, in addition to signing off with some declaration that he was trying to "retire" and focus on art, music and beauty.

Here is one quote from someone he knew and admired, Lloyd Morain:

"Be concerned with what goes on outside you. Be involved, be helpful to others. Don’t stick to one viewpoint, don’t follow leaders. Do good work, live a good life.”

I thought it was a very touching service and meeting the two sons gave me an even greater knowledge of Francis life. Thank you for the nice refreshments as well. I will cherish the memory of Francis attending our Hanukah celebration in December. He always showed how much he cared about the Jewish Humanists and he will be greatly missed by all of us.

It was good to meet Francis' family and to see folks. And it's good to be alive. One benefit of making much of a friend's death and of realizing you're mortal is it makes you more likely to follow your bliss. Francis worked toward that throughout his life and was quite a master there near the end by all reports. Let it be a lesson to us so that he will not have died in vain. ;) (tongue in cheek, y'all. Francis would approve!)

It was very special to have all of us together today remembering Francis, and what we have all meant to one another through the years. Old friends, new friends, and people we met for the first time. I hope everyone feels that they are respected and cared about. It is very easy to get too busy to let people know that you admire them.

II didn't know Francis, but I think that every humanist activist deserves to be recognized and remembered for that work. It was great to meet Francis' sons and learn a little bit about him. I'm grateful to him for starting HFSD and for keeping it going thru the lean years. Well done sir, very well done.

Francis and I debated gun control from a humanist standpoint, about 5 years ago. We had a nice little audience, and it was fun. Sorry to see him pass.....

Hey, that's the guy who arranged for me and Tory Christman to give a talk down here about Scientology a few years ago!

How sad. Condolences to friends and family!
