Interfaith Discussion... With ATHEISTS?

HFSD is hosting a Q&A with the Church of God and non-theists.

San Diego's own "Make a Believer Out of Me" program recently hosted a very conservative denomination of Christianity - known as Church of God - for two episodes: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N00IZCznUo). There was much to talk about and we have since decided to have a live panel discussion. There will be 50 members from the Church of God in attendance and 50 seats available for us non-believers as well (not segregated). The discussion will be moderated (but not a debate format) and will be led entirely by audience questions from both sides of the audience.  Moderating the event will be Harvard alumn, Professor Roy Whitaker (professor of World religions, Christianity, Atheism, African American Religion).  On the panel with Jim Eliason and Sean Taylor of the MABOOM show, will be SDSU Professor of Religious Studies, Pam Fox Kuhlken, Ph.D.

Please join us for what promises to be a fun and interesting event.

Most importantly, there will be children and "fence-sitters" from the Church of God in the audience. Therefore, this is a great opportunity to bring your best questions in hopes of opening the minds of some believers.

This is a FREE event and we will be meeting afterwards with audience and panel members to discuss what we saw.

Great event! Thanks, Sean, Jim and the rest. This type of dialogue rarely takes place. I think our side did a fantastic job. Looking forward to more of these!

This was a great meetup. While I wasn't satisfied with the answers from the Church of God members in most senses, they did show up and they tried and I think that is commendable.
I have seen panel discussions like this turn into the audience taking turns giving testimonies into the mic, and I was pleasantly surprised that this didn't happen.

Fantastic event. Great job, Sean and Jim. I agree with Gary that this group was an unusual one to debate with. I'd like us to sponsor a similar event, only with a well-known Evangelical mega-church like "The Rock."

Gary, regarding your reference to cults, I wonder why sociologists don't define all religious groups as cults.

I am from Sacramento but will be in San Diego for this weekend. This is an interesting idea and I'm very curious about it.

Great! We're looking forward to having new people (and out of towners) come to the event. Please stop by the welcome booth (I'll be staffing it) and introduce your self and get a spiffy name badge if you so desire. :D

Hope parking is not too far!

There's actually a large parking lot directly in front of this building. If it's full, there's a parking lot across the street that is always open and is a very short walk up the entrance. Check the maps of Balboa Park before you come. This is in the Balboa Park Club building right next to the San Diego Automotive Museum and the parking lot across the street is cross streets of President's Way and Park Boulevard.

Sounds like a very unique opportunity! I will take my "be extra respectful and civilized to all" pill that morning =)

I've never been in a public debate before. This will be fun.

Just so you don't get your hopes up too much, this is not formatted as a debate and we are actually quite friendly with this particular church. However, this will be lead entirely from audience questions from both sides, so differences and explanations for those differences will be presented and discussed nonetheless. If you would like to see who the Church of God is (that is scheduled to be in this event), please enjoy this episode of "Make a Believer Out of Me": https://www.youtube.co...
