Dan Barker Debates Catholic Apologist

"GOD: Supreme Being or Imaginary Friend?"

Dan Barker, husband of Annie Laurie Gaylor and co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation will be debating local Catholic apologist, Trent Horn from Catholic Answers.

Admission is FREE! This event will be filmed and produced into a DVD for sale by Catholic Answers along with the book they just published, authored by Trent Horn.

More information is available at

I do not yet have information about snacks or refreshments to be offered; but I assume there will be crackers and wine available.

Please note:  Catholic Answers expects literally hundreds of Catholics to attend.  Surely there will be a Q&A session at the end.  Considering our small numbers in comparison, please consider pre-planning a superb question to ask.

On the whole, I thought that Dan did an excellent job. I even think that bringing up the pedophilia issue was justified, especially because Trent Horn spent so much time on morality and the Catholic Church has a dreadful record concerning human rights. However, I agree that maintaining civility is important and that we need to be careful about making a good impression.

These are great events because new people have already found the movement through us - I think that's one of two important reasons to do these. The other reason is for the other side to see that we're reasonable people who really aren't that different from them, which is what brings the on-the-fence people a little further over the fence. Ideally strong arguments should be the focus, but in terms of the actual effect, typically we humans miss the inconsistencies in our home teams' crappy arguments (as they clearly did Wednesday). So the other guys' impression of us is as at least as important to the *effect* of these events as the arguments everyone is hearing.

Mom is still in the hospital, so, unfortunately, I will have to pass on tonight's debate and festivities.

I really enjoyed the event, and I even got to ask a question. I am excited to attend more.

Hi everyone, i Can't wait for this debate. Is there anyone coming from the north county area? I live in vista and will be taking public transit but if i could ride with someone in my area instead that would be very helpful. Also, i could meet at a point closer to you if that is more convenient. Thanks- [masked]

There are several people who live in north county who need rides. I hope that those who might be available can offer help to those who need it.

I don't know about a meetup point, but here's a map to the Hall for anyone (like me) who gets hopelessly lost finding parking and the building up on the hill...

This looks very interesting. I hope that Dan Barker can press the apologist on the pedophile and also resulting cover up issues. I find it disgusting that Cardinal Mahony is not behind bars.

You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who despises the Catholic Church as much as I do. I'm one of the few enlightened Filipinos who realizes that the Catholic Church has made many of our people a bunch of self-hating sheep. And I consider it a badge of honor that I was barred from a Filipino Internet forum for daring to call the Catholic Church "the church of the child molesters." So yes, I'd be more than willing to come up with and ask a superb question or two that will explicitly criticize the Catholic Cult, the most oppressive institution in the history of the planet.

I'm going to see if Kat is interested in attending. I hope to have a friend free who may enjoy this...

Hmmmm.... "Catholic Answers". My hope is that they will have better ones than I've heard so far. This will be a fun event for me. Looking forward to it!
