River Blitz Mission Valley West

A San Diego River Park Foundation Event....

The vision of the San Diego River Park Foundation is to protect and enhance the San Diego River’s valuable natural and cultural resources and encourage communities to embrace this legacy and to celebrate it with the creation of a river-long park system as the river journeys from the hills and mountains near Julian and Santa Ysabel to the Pacific Ocean.

Volunteers with an interest in the ecology of San Diego are needed to help collect data on invasive plant species, presence of trash and other information along the San Diego River in Mission Valley West.

Volunteers will meet near 5505 Friars Road at the west edge of the YMCA parking lot.  But we request that you park across the street at the Western Division Police Station at 5215 Gaines Street.  You can cross the street at the crosswalk to enter the preserve.

Teams will walk predetermined sections of the river with a trained team leader and use GPS, cameras and field data sheets to gauge the health of the river.

This is a great way to see the river and make a difference for its future and a wonderful hands-on learning opportunity. All data collected will be used to help in efforts to restore our river back to a healthy state. No Experience necessary.

Be sure to dress in clothes that can get a little dirty and wear closed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops allowed for safety reasons).  A hat and sunscreen is recommended.  All tools and supplies are provided by SD River Park Fdn.

A liability waiver is required for all volunteers:

o  If you are under 18 please have your parents fill out this waiver, and bring it with you.  If you are 15 or under, a parent or adult will need to accompany you to the event. http://sandiegoriver.org/docs/Get_Involved_Volunteer_and_Events_Calendar/VolunteerWaiver_Under18.pdf

o  If you are 18 or older, please complete this waiver: http://sandiegoriver.org/docs/Get_Involved_Volunteer_and_Events_Calendar/VolunteerWaiver_Adult.pdf

Was great to meet everyone and discover some new hiking trails. Felt good to be part of the efforts to make the river a better place for all. Thanks to Michael for his great leadership.
