Celebrate the National Day of Reason at Mt. Soledad

Thursday, May 3rd ~ 4 PM to 7 PM

Rev. Baines will speak about 6 PM

Sunset will be at 7:32 pm

This year, spend the National Day of Prayer with friends!

Come hang out with those who support church and state separation at the Mt Soledad Cross. How appropriate that we will meet underneath this "non-religious" "universal" symbol of sacrifice.

Bring a picnic dinner, help yourself to dessert, and enjoy an address by Reverend Steven Baines. Stay for a beautiful sunset.

Like all of us, Rev Baines is watching our current political situation with great interest, and is doing his best to encourage progressive voices, which are needed more than ever.

Reverend Steven Baines is the Religious Outreach Director of Americans United for Searation of Church and State where he is responsible for the organization's national engagement with and mobilization of people of faith. Before coming to Americans United he served as Director of Interfaith Outreach at both the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and People For the American Way. He has also served as Executive Director for Equal partners in Faith, a national interfaith organization committed to fighting racism, sexism and homophobia.

Rev. Baines has served as both senior pastor and associate ministers in Southern Baptist churches in north and South Carolina. Since 1999 he has been affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and is currently serving as the Vice-Moderator at the denomination's national cathedral in Washington, DC, National City Christian Church. He has also held positions at that congregation as Chair of the Elders, deacons and a regular Christian education scholar.

Rev. Baines is a national spokesperson on issues of faith and politics and has been featured debating leaders of the Religious Right and the so-called "ex-gay" movement on CNN, CSPAN, Court TV and numerous syndicated talk radio shows.

Rev. Baines will speak about 6 PM.

Bring your own picnic dinner and beverage. Dessert will be provided. Please RSVP for planning purposes.

Steven Baines was a great speaker. Didn't know much about him personally, but think he is a wonderful representative for Americans United.

A day of prayer, or religious pandering?

The Political Realities Behind the National Day of Prayer
Published on April 27, 2012 by David Niose

Here it comes again. On May 3, the nation will once again be subjected to the annual fiasco wherein conservative Christians utilize the apparatus of government to publicly exalt their theological beliefs, to ensure that their vociferous anti-secular views are promoted as official state doctrine. Read the rest of the article in our files...
