Matt Dillahunty speaks on: "The Superiority of Secular Morality"

Matt Dillahunty is best known as the erudite host of the public-access television show The Atheist Experience. This very popular show (and podcast) has over 55,000 subscribers and 9 million online views. Matt is also co-founder of Iron Chariots, and serves as president of the Atheist Community of Austin.

Matt grew up in a loving, Southern Baptist home and was a fundamentalist Christian for over 20 years. After eight years in the Navy and several in the hit-tech game, he set out to re-affirm his faith with designs on attending seminary and serving in the ministry.

Matt says, "After the first couple of years, reason forced me to acknowledge that my faith had not only been weakened by my studies - it had been utterly destroyed. The thoughts, writings and wisdom of people like; Robert Ingersoll, Voltaire, Dan Barker, Richard Dawkins, Farrell Till and many others, helped free my mind from the shackles of religion without a single moment of despair. I continue to study philosophy, religion, science, history and the many other topics which have helped me to understand reality and enjoy my life."

It’s common for religious theists to claim that their morality is far superior to secular, humanistic, and godless morality. Theists prefer their own religious morality - and the commands of their own god, but when push comes to shove the general attitude is that any religious morality based upon the commands of any god is vastly preferable to a secular morality.

Come hear Matt make a convincing argument that secular morality is indeed superior to religious morality.

This event is being sponsored by the Humanist Association of San Diego (HASD). Tickets are $10 per person, $15 at the door, $20 reserved. Purchase tickets at the HASD meetup website HERE or at the door on the evening of the event. Member organizations of the San Diego Coalition of Reason are happy to support this event, and will be present to share about their secular groups. So come early, have a look around, and meet some fellow heathens!

Excellent. Matt really knows the topic of morality well, and presents it with clarity and common sense that makes it accessible for those of us who are not deep thinkers or philosophers.

I want to make one last announcement
We are having dinner at Bamboo Lounge following the event (1475 University Ave), we are also running really low on first few front row seats. If you want one, get yours now before they are gone. To answer ticket questions, just bring your paypal receipt, or use your name to get in (we have a guest list). At noon Saturday online sales close. Also, one last note: We want to make sure that everyone who wants to come to this has a chance to attend. We also realize that being broke only feels worse when there are interesting things to do. We have a limited number of gratis admissions. We had a very generous person make sure that a limited number of people who had not yet purchased their ticket had a chance to come. So if you have not yet purchased your ticket and cost IS the issue, email us [masked]. Everything will be kept confidential, and we will make sure that you can come if you really want to (but the donor said no refunds).

Just in case anyone wants to debate Matt on his Morality lecture, you might want to watch the last episode of The Atheist Experience (or if you simply want to enjoy this delectable show) as one of the callers tries to do so on a number of statements that Matt makes in his lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_fDZl-WGtQ&feature=em-uploademail

Hello everyone, we are going to be doing a last minute major price adjustment.

In being ambitious, we reserved a ballroom at one of the few nice hotels with free parking, we have complimentary coffee and hors d'oeuvres, are flying our speaking in with an honorarium, and rented an extra room for the Humanist and Atheist Parents. This event led us to set a significantly higher price point that we otherwise would have. $20 is generally affordable but not all.

In the spirit of community and making this event available to more people, we are reducing admission to $10 advance, $15 at the door, $20 reserved seating. Reserved seating is the first few rows.

For those who have already paid, you will receive an option for a $10 per seat refund or a reserved seat. We will also be offering advanced senior/student/military discounts on sdhumanist.org. This will be available later this afternoon as I adjust the paypal button.

There will be no advanced discount, but we expect that the ballroom will fill up, so please reserve your seat early. And one thing about pricing, we realize that though $20 is affordable to most- it may be a hardship for some people. If that prevents you from registering, let us know and we will work something out ([masked]). And plus, there is free parking!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
