David Silverman, President of American Atheists

"In Defense of Firebrand Atheism"

David is the irrepressible voice for the equal rights of atheists. He is an inspiring speaker, and a good friend to our secular community here in San Diego. Videos of Mr. Silverman in action are posted on the San Diego Coalition of Reason website.

2013 marks the 50th anniversary of American Atheists. Founded in 1963 by Madelyn Murray O'Hair after her successful battle against mandatory school prayer, the organization is dedicated to working for the civil rights of atheists, promoting separation of state and church, and providing information about atheism.

David will be sharing his insights about social and political action by and for atheists in our country. He will also report on the successes of American Atheists as they take a decidedly more confrontational approach than many organizations that also protect the rights of nonbelievers.

Was the presentation recorded, and if so, will it be available anywhere? YouTube?

    February 25, 2013

    • Taylor

It was and so long as everything worked out appropriately it will be uploaded on YouTube and announced to everyone (via the Discussion Boards on the Meetup sites for all the groups under SDCoR.org).

David gave a very spirited defense of "Firebrand Atheism" - what it is and what it isn't - backed up with an excellent Power Point. He was funny, optimistic, motivating and inspiring. He emphasized telling the truth and seeing theists, not as the enemy, but as the victims of a hoax who need our honesty and our help. He was tough and uncompromising, but compassionate and practical. It was a great night!

It was very informative and enlightening. I like the way he laid out his talk, it made a lot of sense and I can get behind that!

Can we park anywere or is there some place in particular we are supposed to park?

    February 24, 2013

    • Debbie A.

I hate to say it like this, but READ... read the WHOLE announcement. There are links about parking. I suggest Gilman Parking structure, OR, walk over from the VA parking lot.

Good beers at Rock Bottom, I'll stop in after.

Remember, parking is free on weekends at UCSD. The Gilman Parking Structure is a short walk from this fabulous venue.
Exit 5N at La Jolla Village Drive, left off the exit, cross bridge over freeway, first right takes you up near VA Hospital, stay straight directly into Gilman garage. Link to campus map above. Allow time to get to event early.

Does the HFSD have tickets, if so, how do I purchase and save?

    February 18, 2013

    • Debbie A.

OK... this was written 3 days ago. I will bring whatever "extra" tickets I have to the event. They will be there with the tickets the UCSD box office will be selling. I suggest you arrive before 4 to ensure you get a seat. They literally will close the doors on the event when we hit the max number of people allowed in the room.

    • Lisa

So if I pay $10 through PayPal now, I can get my ticket from you at the door around 3:30pm? Thanks

      February 22, 2013

  • Debbie A.

Just a note... this event might sell out. Reserved seating guarantees the first 3 (maybe 4) rows (depends on the room set up which I will not directly observe until Sunday). Any ticket guarantees admission. There are about 50 tickets left at the box office as of yesterday. My advice is if you want a ticket, get there at 3:30. Don't plan on rushing the door at 4.

Hmm, can I buy tickets at the door? Should I be getting reserved tickets?

      February 22, 2013

    • Dan F.

Sun, you can get them from the UCSD ticket office - https://ucsdboxoffice.... or save the online fee and buy them in person...or see Debbie's response to the same question below a few days ago where she wrote: "... I still have some tickets. If you want to buy directly from me, and avoid the "fee", I can leave a ticket for you at "will call" AT THE DOOR. You can pay using PayPal with meetup. [masked]"

About 10 tickets remaining for the private dinner with David.

    February 11, 2013

  • NancY

Do we know yet how much the tickets will cost?

    January 24, 2013

    • Debbie A.

$10 general, $23 reserved. Tix can be purchased at the UCSD box office - soon - or online (for a fee of $5). HFSD will be buying tickets in bulk so we can avoid some of the fees.

Any chance of arranging child care for this event?

    January 24, 2013

    • Debbie A.

Hi Ann, Our preference would be to have childcare available at every HFSD/SDCoR event. Unfortunately, this particular location — on a Sunday, makes that almost impossible. There are no adjoining rooms. I would be happy to work with a parenting subcommittee (with an active chair-person) to see if we can come up with a viable plan. Write to me at [masked]. There are a fair number of moving parts to this event, and we would need some help.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
