An essential aspiration of Humanism is to improve the living conditions of all human beings (not to the exclusion of animals and the environment) throughout the world regardless of faith, creed, or philosophy.
Often, the concepts of community and good works that don’t directly or indirectly benefit one’s organization take a back seat to discussion and debate. Getting the message of Humanism out to the public is extremely important. However, the message cannot consist of words alone. Our legacy must be sustained by the appropriate deeds which flow from an informed, comprehensive worldview.
Humanity On Call (HOC) was created by the leadership of the Humanist Fellowship in order to provide the members of Humanist organizations and non-theistic groups and unaffiliated individuals with opportunities to join together and support a variety of community groups that are providing valuable services to the people in and around San Diego. Over the past few years, HOC has supported numerous projects including Habitat For Humanity, Feeding America San Diego, California Coastal Cleanup, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We will continue to do so.
The decision has been made to transition HOC from its current, independent meetup page to the Humanist Fellowship of San Diego (HFSD) meetup page. By so doing we hope to accomplish several objectives:
I trust that this move will benefit you and Humanity On Call and will better enable all of us to fulfill our personal aspirations as humanists and/or non-theists.
What should you do? Sign up for Humanity on Call events which already appear on our Meetup page. Everyone is welcome, so bring your friends and family.
Parting Thoughts on Good Deeds
Immortality is to live your life doing good things, and leaving your mark behind.
Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs to the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.
To be doing good deeds is man's most glorious task.
I cannot do all the good that the world needs. But the world needs all the good that I an do.
How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a weary world.
