Hi All, I cannot FIND a name for the most obvious of fallacies, the assumption that X is the same as Y, X = Y as in a tree is the same thing as a horse, or homosexuality IS THE SAME AS pedophilia, or a confession is the same thing as the truth. I would call it a FALSE EQUIVALENCE or some such, but I CANNOT FIND IT LISTED ANYWHERE. Can you help?

Hi Richard- I think you might be confusing a "conclusion" with "the process of logical deduction." Saying "a tree is the same thing as a horse" is a conclusion. Why do they believe that? Their answer as to "why" would be the logical fallacy. If they say the reason is because "they are made of the same stuff, basic living cells" then that might be the fallacy of composition/division (see your chart of fallacies): http://www.logicalfallacies.info/relevance/composition/

What is the name of a good book on logic? Several friends have declared the book I have TO BE WRONG. Maybe I should get one that someone can agree with.

Richard asked: "What is the name of a good book on logic?" A PSU Philosophy professor suggested this book as a great book for "critical thinking" ("logic" might be a different book, not sure how literal you were being): "How to Think about Weird Things : Critical Thinking for a New Age by Theodore Schick and Lewis Vaughn (2004, Paperback, Revised)" http://product.half.ebay.com/How-to-Think-about-Weird-Things-Critical-Thinking-for-a-New-Age-by-Theodore-Schick-and-Lewis-Vaughn-2004-Paperback-Revised/30789279&tg=info I'm preparing a follow-on class using this book. The 4th edition mentioned above isn't the newest, but it is much cheaper and supposedly not too much was updated/added.
