Meetup Times and Locations:
8:45am - Prediger Road Trailhead Parking
9:00am - Car spot departure to start of hike
Our four objectives as seen from Black Dome on 8/13/2011:
Getting there: Take the New York State Thruway to exit 20: Saugerties. Turn left on Route 212 West. After 2.3 miles fork right on county route 35, then after 1.5 miles turn left to stay on county route 35. Prediger Road is 5.2 miles ahead on the left past the top of the ravine. Go less than a mile down Prediger Road until it ends at trail head parking.
Route description: 9-13 miles distance, 5000 feet of total elevation gain.
- Car spotting: We will go in as few cars as possible to Devil's Tombstone Campground (Parking fee) where the hike will begin - the entry point is the Devil's Path (red) to the east. Alternate: if the group prefers we can start at a shortcut to Plateau that saves the 2 mile long summit plateau of Plateau.
- 4 Peaks: We take the Devil's Path (red) 9 miles across all 4 summits (Big views!) to the last one on Indian Head.
- Descent: Continue on the Devil's Path (red) 4 miles over the eastern sub-peaks of Indian Head and back towards Prediger Road. Alternate: If we are making bad time, or too tired, we will go back to the cars via the Jimmy Dolan Notch trail (blue) to cut off about 1.5 miles. As a bail-out, this trail can also be taken after Twin to cut off 3.5 miles.
- Finish: After some generous volunteers take the car spotters back to their vehicles, we're off to celebrate our accomplishment!
Group Size: The DEC limits group sizes in Catskills Wilderness Areas to 12. If we have more than 12, we'll be splitting into two groups, the faster group will go first and the slower group will go after 15 minutes so we are at least 1 mile apart.
Check out the photos from this hike on September 30, 2012!
