Part 2: Halcott Mountain - Saturday 1pm
Overnight: Car Camping
Part 3: North Dome & Sherrill - Sunday 9am
CAPABLE BEGINNERS WELCOME! This is a somewhat more than a "beginners hike" but we'll taking it easy so most abilities are welcome! I wouldn't recommend this for beginners unless you attend one of the two bushwhack hikes the previous day.
Are you racking up trailed Catskill peaks and asking yourself, "When will I ever get around to all those bushwhacks?" Now's your chance! HVH will be spending the entire weekend in the Catskills taking fresh bushwhackers to FOUR Catskill 3500 Club canisters in three hikes!
PART 3: NORTH DOME and SHERRILL MOUNTAIN
Total Mileage: 6.5 miles
Total Elevation Gain: 2500 feet
Estimated Hike Time: 6 hours
Special Gear / Requirements: Warm and cool weather wicking clothing (avoid cotton!), food/water as you feel is appropriate, first aid, insulating layer and rain gear (just in case), trail conference map #142, compass, camera!
Getting there: Take the New York State Thruway to exit 19: Kingston. Keep right for Route 28 - Go just under 28 miles to Route 42 and turn right. Shaft Road parking area is 3.7 miles ahead on the right. Look for the little wooden parking sign just before a white ranch house with a hedge of blue spruce along Route 42.
Route Description: We will go in as few cars as possible to the starting point of the Devil's Path on Spruceton road. We take the Devil's Path (red) 1.5 miles and stop before a hard left turn at the St Anne-North Dome Col. Instead of turning left with the trail, we will turn right and head into the woods (bushwhack) and climb a series of ledges for less than 1.5 miles to the top of North Dome and search for the summit canister. After signing in we head west about another 1.5 miles (bushwhack) directly down and up to the top of Sherrill. After signing in, we finish by heading just over 2 miles west-southwest (bushwhack) down the high ridge line back to Shaft Road. After generous volunteers return the spotters to their cars, we're off to Brio's to celebrate!
Pace and Time: This is a tough day for beginners, but to accommodate all abilities this may take up to 6 hours.
Group Size: The DEC limits group sizes in the Hunter-Westkill Mountain Wilderness to 12. If we have more than 12, we will split into two groups and hike 1 mile apart.
WARNING REGARDING BUSHWHACKS: "Bushwhacks" are hikes that go off of maintained trails and through pure wilderness. Please make sure you are very confident in your ability to navigate through the woods without trails since it is very easy to get lost in these forests, especially in the summer. Map & Compass REQUIRED. GPS is also recommended, but it is not a substitute for a map & compass and the skills to use them effectively.
