ADK Great Range sampler - backpack/basecamp

  • November 29, 2013 · 5:00 PM

Your RSVP is not valid, and will be put on Waiting List, unless you answer my RSVP questions fully.

I haven't fully worked out the route(s) but prepare to backpack in 5 miles or so Friday night to set up basecamp.  We will likely dayhike the lower (as in elevation, i.e., Wolfjaws & Armstrong) on Saturday, then the upper (Gothics, Saddleback, Basin) on Sunday (better weather) before heading out.  I am not going to Haystack or Marcy (the latter of which is technically not part of the Great Range).

Expect winter conditions above 3,000'.  Must bring traction, including possibly snowshoes.  No sweep, no waiting whatsoever.  Prepare to hike out on your own if necessary.

We need drivers!  Please post if you drive and can take how many passengers from where.  Passengers, chip in for gas, toll(s), coffee for the driver.  I do not coordinate rides, so be proactive about offering carpool and contacting drivers. Post on the Meetup page.

I will not be able to join this time, but would be grateful to learn from your experience about the following: Where do you recommend setting up base for a Gothic ascent? Much appreciated. Steve

Steve, from St Hubert's parking... Gothics can be climbed in a day as a loop. The fist and last 3.5 miles to Lower Ausable are an easy walk by road. No real need to camp. But if you wish to approach it from the other side, a good place to set up camp or stay at a lean to would be around John Brook Lodge.

I will be driving up Wednesday early afternoon. If anyone needs a ride let me know. I plan to hike the lower great range, then meet up with everyone to hike the upper great range. I will be setting up camps and making my way in to be closer to the peaks we intend to climb.

Staying at a hotel if anyone wants to share. 2 bed room for 2 nights is only $65pp (total!). Not a bad deal when the local hostel bunk room is $50pp.

technically haystack and marcy are part of the Great Range. At least officially, geographically it's debatable but they are linked by a ridge that remains at nearly 4000ft, making it hard to argue they aren't linked. Geographically, Hedgehog and Rooster Comb are also part. Rooster Comb having some great rock climbs in the summit and nice views from what is essentially a bare summit.

Crappy weather this weekend so postponing Great Range. I'm going to bushwhack MacNaughton on Saturday and Scott will get Cliff+Redfield. Then Sunday, we'll do Colvin & Blake. Justin, hope to see you in the 'Daks one of these days; I want to get your input on ADK slides!
