GIANT STAIRS Hike & ROCK SCRAMBLE at Palisades Interstate Park, NJ

Join us for a 4-5 mile Hike with Intermediate Rock Scrambles at Giant Stairs (Palisades Interstate Park)

This hike explores the northern end of the New Jersey Section of the Palisades Interstate Park. It is, perhaps, the most rewarding loop hike in the park, as it incorporates a number of scenic features and, for nearly the entire distance, you are far away from the noise of the Parkway. But it is also the most difficult hike in the park, as it involves not only steep climbs and descents on uneven rock steps, but also nearly a mile of walking near the shore of the river on jumbled rocks.

As a special treat we will be making a small detour off the beginning of our loop  to see the Woman's Federation Monument Castle!

Unlike previous visits you may have made to Giants Stairs, I will be offering further exploration of some of the boulders and crevices along the shoreline for any of the more adventurous members in the group (hopefully all of you!)

We will meet at: The Parking area by the State Line Cafe by the State Line Lookout

Driving Directions:

Take the Palisades Interstate Park north from the George Washington Bridge. Continue for 1.7 miles beyond Exit 2, and turn right at a sign for the State Line Lookout. Follow the access road for about half a mile until it ends at a large parking lot near the lookout. (If you are coming from the north on the Parkway, bear left just beyond Exit 3 and follow the signs for the lookout).

Distance: Approximately 4-5 miles

Hiking Pace: Slow but physically challenging

Estimated Hike Time: 3-4 hours

Difficulty: Intermediate - Rocky Terrain, Scrambling, steep Ascents and Descents with a total of approx 700' elevation gain

Current Weather Forecast: Partly Sunny with a high of 48 degrees

Recommended Gear:

  • A Small Pack - nothing too large that will become a hindrance in the scrambles
  • Related maps, a compass or GPS, Water, Snacks, First Aid, etc.

Is anyone else stuck on the cross river parkway right now. :/

Good morning to all the brave souls who are still on the list :)
We should have a blast today. It looks like it will be cloudy throughout the day but there isn't any rain on the forecast. Temps will be up to 45-50 degrees at best. Please bring a wind breaker and some gloves. The bouldering will be hands on and I expect the rocks will be a bit cold to the touch. See everyone soon! If anyone knows the area well and has any interest or suggestions on a good place to grab a bite afterwards I'm open to suggestions!

I am also wondering about the difficulty level as well. I have done Breakneck once; want to challenge myself but do not want to be in over my head as well. Thanks

    November 8, 2013

    • Diana

Not having done Breakneck I can't compare them, but I've done the Giant Stairs....it's difficult. The day I did it, it was extremely hot out, and that compounded the difficulty, but I just have to say that this hike is NOT a walk in the woods. The 200 feet ascent isn't terrible, but the 1 mile laterally north is the hardest hike I have ever done, and I have hiked the Presidentials in NH.

      November 8, 2013

    • Caysey

I fail to see how this hike could be harder than doing the presidentials in NH??

Leaving from UWS tomorrow if anyone needs a ride. This is my first hike with this group. Looking forward to it and hope it's not too crazy but I'm up for the challenge…I think!

Is this hike more difficult than hiking Breakneck? I've always wanted to explore Giant Stairs, yet I want be prepared and safe. Thanx!

    November 8, 2013

    • Caysey

If you stay on the trail it's easier. If you explore the boulders along the shore it could be more challenging for some.

      November 8, 2013

    • Diana

Caysey, the trail goes over the talus fields. You cannot avoid them.
