We will meet at the Otterkill Road Parking area which is underneath the Moodna Viaduct (MTA train trestle) and SPOT CARS HERE. We will then drive to the parking area on Route 32 at the Corner of Evans Drive in Highland Mills, NY Where we will begin the hike.
We will then walk North East on Route 32 for about a quarter of a mile until we meet the Teal Blazed Long Path. We will then follow the long path along the MTA railroad tracks for another quarter of a mile until it veers left and begins to ascend High Nob. The Long Path then begins to steeply ascend High Nob with a short rock scramble. (This is my preferred climb up Schunemunk) At the top of High Nob we will stop briefly at a scenic view which overlooks Black Rock Forest and Storm King Mountain. We will continue to follow the Long Path as it looses elevation before ascending the main Schunemunk Ridge. Once we've reached the top of the ridge after another brief scramble, we will turn right (North East) on the Yellow Jessup Trail which remains relatively flat as it follows the ridge line. The group will then follow the Yellow trail until we meet the white Megaliths Spur Trail. The group will stop at the Megaliths and possibly explore the large rocky boulders there depending on weather and trail conditions. We will then continue following the Yellow Trail past several scenic views overlooking the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain, until it reaches the White Unnamed Trail. We will turn left (West) on the white trail as it descends the Eastern Schunemunk ridge into the valley and then ascends the Western Ridge crossing a red trail before meeting up with the Long Path Again. We will then follow the Long Path until it reaches the White Trestle Trail. The group will then follow the Trestle Trail as it descends past several scenic views including the Moodna Viaduct Testle and ultimately the cars spotted on Otterkill road.
If time allows we might be able to stop off at Palaia Vineyards for wine tastings on the way back to the cars parked on Route 32 following the hike.
Snow?... Game On!
